There are double standards in media all over the place. This isn’t one of them. Ohio isn’t a national program. Michigan is — on top of being the winningest program in college football history. The general public is going to care more about one of the biggest brands in college football, a program on national television every week than the one that isn’t. That’s how popularity works.
