Ugandans should not get overexcited about the recent arrest of Speaker Anita Among, because this regime has never shown genuine commitment to fighting corruption.

If they were serious, they would have long arrested all the powerful officials implicated in the Karamoja iron sheets scandal, including vice president, prime minister and ministers who stole relief iron sheets meant for the poor people of Karamoja.

We believe Among’s real mistake was not corruption, but the growing rumors that she had presidential ambitions.

In a system where power is treated like a family inheritance, anyone seen as a threat is quickly cut down. That is why many Ugandans see this arrest as political survival, not a real fight against corruption.
