"Is this just a coldโฆ or something more?" ๐คง
Here's how I think about it as a pediatrician. ๐
First, the reassuring truth: Most colds are supposed to look kind of rough โ and most get better on their own at home. In fact, most respiratory infections can be managed at home with zero medicine from me.
What a "normal" cold usually looks like:
โ Runny/stuffy nose (yes, even green or yellow mucus)
โ Cough
โ Sore throat
โ Low-grade fever for the first few days
โ A cranky kid who still perks up, plays, drinks, and smiles between the misery
Unfortunately, they last longer than you'd think. Colds commonly run about 10โ14 days, and a cough can hang around for up to 3 weeks. A lingering cough alone, in a happy, breathing-comfortably kid, usually just needs more time.
Now โ the stuff that makes me say "call me" or "go get seen." ๐จ
Pick up the phone (or head in) for:
๐ด Trouble breathing โ fast breathing, ribs sucking in with each breath, flaring nostrils, grunting, or you can see they're working hard to breathe
๐ด Blue or dusky lips or skin
๐ด A fever in a baby under 3 months
๐ด Very high fever, or fever that keeps climbing back after several days of improvement
๐ด Signs of dehydration โ no wet diapers/peeing, no tears, dry mouth, won't drink
๐ด Extreme sleepiness, hard to wake, floppy, or not responding like usual
๐ด A rash of little purple/red spots that don't fade when you press on them
๐ด Ear pain, or symptoms that drag past 10 days with NO improvement or that suddenly get worse
Trust your gut. "Something just isn't right with my child" is one of the strongest warning signs there is, and I take it seriously every single time. You know your kid better than anyone.
When in doubt, that's literally what we're here for.

@ZachLahn Pediatrician here. I'll include multiple studies that you might want to look at before posting anti-vax rhetoric in the future.

@NicHulscher As a MPH Iโd expect youโd be able to identify the major concerns from many of these studies including surveillance bias, internal inconsistencies, multiple comparisons within studies leading to significant findings that can occur by chance, etc. ๐คท
@ChrisMWilliams he stated that he really only believed one dorm had a spirit. Then he proceeded to tell an identical story of seeing a girl sitting in the parlor and not seeing anything when he went to say hello. Been a believer since. 3/3
@ChrisMWilliams I shrugged it off and didnโt think much of it until I was talking to a maintenance worker later that summer. We were talking about the dorms and all the weird stuff that happens when you are alone in them. Before I even had told him about what I had seen in Freeman, 2/3
