昔、ある三人の教授に米国大学院への推薦状をお願いしたとき、二人は快諾してくださったが、もう一人には「推薦状は自分で書いてください。私がそれにサインしますから」と言われ、推薦状の書き方の本を一部コピーして手渡されたということがあった。
　今思い起こすと、そのときに納得できないというか悲しい気持ちになったのは、私がその教授の講義を全て最前列で受け、全ての講義でAをもらっていたにもかかわらず、「推薦状は自分で書いてください」と言われたことだったのかもしれない。まるで「君のことは知らない」と言われているかのように感じたのかもしれない。
　とりあえず自分で書いてみようと思ったものの、結局、自分を推薦する文章を書くことがどうしてもできなかった。ある教授に相談したところ、「推薦状は推薦者が書かないとダメだ」と言われ、他の教授にお願いするよう助言してくれたので、そのようにした。

ある程度長く仕事をしてくると、自分の能力やスキルが現在のポジションに求められる水準を超えることがある。日本語でいえば「あの人をあのポジションで働かせるのはもったいない」という状況である。それは、昇進や転職のタイミングが来たということを意味する。
　今回の研究で、私は数値流体力学のアルゴリズム研究でも全く同じことが起こり得ることを知った。つまり、解の精度が良くなりすぎると、今のポジションには相応しくなくなり、次のステージに移る時が来る。というわけで、来月の米国航空宇宙学会での私のトークは、このスライドから始まる。なかなか面白いトークになりそうで、私自身とても楽しみにしている。

同僚のNASA研究者から「君のこのジャーナル論文を送ってくれないか？」というメッセージが届いた。ラングレー研究所では、今もまだジャーナルへのアクセスが制限されている。私は査読活動で貯めた無料アクセス権を利用して、すぐにダウンロードして送ってあげた。
　学会出席を却下されても契約通り論文を発表したり、論文アクセスが制限されても同僚のために論文を提供したりと、我ながら頼りになる契約研究員だと思う。
