we made peek: a small face for a name
the same name always gives the same face, so there is no avatar to pick and no image to upload
it is for the small places where a name shows up without one: profiles, comments, lists, interfaces.

spent two days building apps for Duo with @DevinAI - really enjoyed the process
11 apps, 11 merged PRs:
sudoku, flashcards, minesweeper, pixel studio, nonogram, pocket budget, recipe box, music sketchpad, battleship, block drop, and mind map.

introducing peek: a string in, a face out.
a library that turns any name into a unique face. deterministic, plain svg, zero runtime dependencies.
- same name, same face, on the server and in the browser. ssr-safe, hydrates clean
- 4 faces, 7 colors, 11 expressions, >20K looks (more faces and styles on the way)
- state on top: expression, gaze, optional animation
- toSvg(name) runs anywhere js does: node, bun, deno, edge
- ~3 KB of svg per face
<Peek name="my cat" expression="happy" animate />
wanted an app in the duo store.
so i gave myself a reason to play chess at work ♟️
Chess is live with three bot levels, dual-screen gameplay, fold-to-switch, undo, move history, and win/loss stats.
the bot is already judging my moves.
duo 0.2.0 is out!
- 25 apps rebuilt after apple's
- real maps, live stocks, real news
- notifications for any app
- device events, mic and files in the sdk
- ui kit 1.2
apple's folding iphone, simulated. all on the web.
won a devin max plan!!!!!! thanks @dabit3
first job tonight: devin builds apps for duo's app store while i sleep. goal is 100+
will post what it shipped in the morning
introducing duo - an iphone duo simulator on the web.
apple hasn't shipped theirs yet, so i shipped mine.
fold it, run apps side by side, or install apps from its own app store. there's an sdk + react ui kit, so you can build for a phone nobody has.
opus 5.5 took duo’s bezel from 2.2 mm to 1.2 mm tonight, polished the app store, and made this video from real frames of the app.
this model is really good!
fair, so i spent my day building a real browser in Duo
safari now has tabs, back/forward, bookmarks, history and a page menu. on Duo’s own site the bar even shrinks as you scroll
here it is browsing Duo, inside Duo
nobody tells you how strange the first few weeks of building an account from zero can feel.
you’re working on it every day, but sometimes you still don’t know if you’re doing it right. excited, confused, and a little overwhelmed all at once.
just pushed an update to the settings app for Duo
it now matches the actual iphone duo almost exactly, which is a very confident claim for a phone i don’t own
"you are in the reputation-building business, and software is actually downstream of that."
Great read if you've started something new and feel pressure to prove yourself. The advice: don't spiral. Be a reliable teammate first & the bigger work will follow.
