ADHD IS NOT A MYTH — AND PORTRAYALS THAT CAST DOUBT ON IT CAN CAUSE REAL HARM.
Having watched Channel 4’s The Great ADHD Myth?, I am deeply concerned about the impact that programmes like this can have on people living with ADHD.
For many people, receiving an ADHD diagnosis comes after years of struggling to understand why aspects of everyday life can be so difficult. ADHD can affect education, employment, relationships, confidence and day-to-day functioning.
When people feel that a national television programme has questioned or undermined their condition, the impact doesn’t necessarily end when the credits roll.
It can reinforce stigma.
It can leave people feeling they have to justify their diagnosis.
It can encourage others to dismiss very real difficulties.
And it can leave people who are already struggling feeling unheard and invalidated.
Of course, healthcare, ADHD assessment, diagnosis and prescribing should be open to scrutiny and responsible discussion. These are important issues and there should be room for balanced, evidence-based debate.
But scrutinising how ADHD is diagnosed and treated is very different from presenting the subject in a way that some viewers may feel creates doubt about whether ADHD itself is a legitimate condition.
That distinction matters.
People with ADHD deserve to be treated with understanding and respect, and their lived experiences deserve to be part of the conversation.
ADHD is real. Our experiences are real. And our voices matter.
ADHD UK is gathering feedback following the programme and providing information for people who may wish to raise concerns through Ofcom:

Please share if you believe the voices and lived experiences of people with ADHD deserve to be heard.
The way neurodivergent people are represented in the media matters.

"It has forever been thus: So long as men write what they think, then all of the other freedoms- all of them- may remain intact. And it is then that writing becomes a weapon of truth, an article of faith, an act of courage."
~Rod Serling
For those told they're not good enough, they will never make it... Someone once said to my dad, "You ought to switch careers because you'll never be a writer." Image: Rod Serling 4th Emmy
@Svengoolie I certainly liked "Village of the Giants" last night and I liked that clip with you and Jordan Ladd. I didn't know that Jordan did animation voice work herself.
“Willoughby? Maybe it’s wishful thinking or maybe it’s the last stop in the vast design of things… Whatever it is, it comes with sunlight and serenity and it’s part of The Twilight Zone.”

@Svengoolie Or as that Tom and Jerry cartoon "Safety Second" put it, "Make it safe and sane". Don't fling fireworks against each other like Tom, Jerry and Nibbles did. 🤣
@Svengoolie Since Godzilla is in this movie here is Stony Brook NY's very own Blue Oyster Cult with their famous song! 😄 #svengoolie: https://t.co/Kw7iH4RNdY
Her first steady TV job was as a dancing elf in Hotpoint appliance commercials.
She was fired after 39 commercials because she became pregnant and could no longer fit into the costume.
She later built a television empire that helped open doors for female writers and producers.
Hint: She and her husband built a TV production company that also gave us Hill Street Blues.
Do you know her name?
