HBCU Land Grants have been starved since their inception in the 1890s, not just for the past decade. But good for finally writing about it.

On the topic of historic underfunding of #HBCUs. West Virginia State Univ received $3000 in 1890 to start as a land grant institution. That is about $100,000 in today's money - no zeros missing. After that they received $5000 annually.

The GI Bill after WWII was a boom to white state universities and allowed them to expand to the flagships institutions they are today. Of the 1.2 million Black people serving in WWII, most were denied GI Bill benefits. Thus #HBCUs were left out financially yet again.

Let's all commit to working on changing that. Not just the tenure issue, but let's work on the academic environment that is so hostile to Black women and let's pledge to support them in any way we can.
