In John chapter 8 Jesus is back at the Temple teaching. Suddenly He is interrupted by a group of religious leaders & Pharisees who have brought a woman to Him. In vs 4 they say they’ve caught her in the act of adultery and they want to know what Jesus prescribes?
They contend that the law of Moses says she should be stoned to death. They’re referencing Deut 22:21-24 but they are not quoting the Scriptures correctly. Deut 22:22 actually says:
““If a man is discovered committing adultery, both he and the woman must die. In this way, you will purge Israel of such evil.”
Deuteronomy 22:22 NLT
If they caught the woman in the act they obviously saw the man too, but they didn’t bring him. They don’t really want justice, they just want to put Jesus in a bind.
Jesus responds by saying “You are correct about the penalty. So let the person who hasn’t committed a sin throw the first stone.” He wrote some things on the ground-possibly reminding the crowd of their sins-and one by one the people leave.
That leaves Jesus alone with the woman. He IS qualified to cast the first stone but doesn’t. Jesus tells her he doesn’t CONDEMN her and commands her to “Go and sin no more.”
This is an example of grace. Many people misinterpret this passage and say Jesus did not judge the woman. The reality is He did judge her. He acknowledged her guilt when He told the crowd they could stone her. What Jesus said is that He didn’t condemn her. And He told her to repent of her sinful lifestyle.
So the lesson here is HOW we are to interact with people who are doing wrong. We shouldn’t condemn but we also shouldn’t condone. Our goal should be to show grace with the goal of repentance. To urge people to “go and sin no more.”
