In my campaign, my focus was on state of NHS & fairer funding for Cambs GPs.
I warmly welcomed the swift invitation from @Doc_Morrow to visit @MedicalGranta Practices in #Sawston to meet team & hear directly about their & patients’ experiences of local NHS (good & bad).
We're delighted that @Doc_Morrow has been appointed as a Non-Executive Director of our hospitals.
James is a GP and a partner at Granta Medical Practices, where he was instrumental in its creation and growth.
He takes up the position from today.

@jeremyblevy@TheEconomist When you understand that the NHS funds an unlimited year of general practice attendances at a rate less than the going cost of insuring a gerbil for vet’s fees, it becomes clear just how little resources are available in NHS general practice
This hit me hard.
I am so sorry to the Junior Doctors that we have let down by not calling for this sooner.
I am sorry to my children and parents who if they stay in this country will likely have a poorer health service.
I am sorry to the public for not shouting louder.
As a GP on mat leave there's not much I can do to help the juniors, but here's my piece with some honest truths.
We are at risk of putting off lots of bright graduates from choosing medicine.

@ChristineSinsky and @Doc_Morrow‘s editorial discusses the costs of physician turnover and the value of a continuous relationship between physicians and patients in primary care. https://t.co/AWVXxjfgLJ
My local ADHD clinic has an *8-PAGE* referral form that needs to be completed (along with a referral letter and the results of an ADHD questionnaire) before a referral will be accepted for review. How can all this work be done in a typical 10-15 minute GP consultation?
"The solution to clinician burnout is to fix the environment that causes burnout in the first place." @Ted_Melnick.
In @JAMA_current we rec $50M/yr x 10 yr in research into optimizing practice environment. (< 0.1% of current research budget) https://t.co/Op5wIAbdrg
Physician turnover is costly
In the US: There is an estimated $86 000 excess healthcare expenditures for each departing primary care physician (GIM, Peds or FM), totaling $1 billion per year across the USA. (1/7)

Why it might be hard to see a GP
27000 total - 1900 fewer than 2010
130000 Hospital Drs - 29000 more than 2010
7% increase in population
15% increase in the number of patients per GP

Delighted to have co-authored this commentary with @ChristineSinsky
Relationship-based medicine produces better care and cheaper care. It also enhances both physician and patient satisfaction.
We need all of these.
Time to prioritise relationships ahead of transactions
High cost of broken relationships w/one's PCP: ↓Q, ↑costs. Our rec's:
(1) prioritize enduring relationships with patients and
within teams;
(2) push more decision authority to the physicians closest to patients

How can you deliver a two week appointment guarantee without increasing capacity? It’s not more targets the NHS needs but more doctors, as I said today.
