Good question.
1. Stopped worrying too much. I give my all for everything. But if I don't achieve it after all efforts, I move on. Even if the whole world is crashing, I get worried in less proportion.
2. Family: Became more family oriented. Up to extended family. People that thought I was stingy when I was in my 20s and early 30s got to realize that I was only building and they overstated my capacity then.
3. Exercise & health: My exercise (playing football 3x weekly) and medical (bi-annual medical checks) routines help my health.
4. Quit 9-5 at 40. But still not sure whether it should fit here, because my 9-5 was also on good trajectory.
5. Environment: Thought because everything is available online, there was no nothing that can move me again. Moved to a new physical environment last year and I saw myself getting motivated as if I am just starting life. Never knew with everything I knew in life, a physical environment can still push me like that.

Celebrating with my boy Abd Mannan
A billionaire wrote a book on "Making it Big," you say you won't read it because he started life in London.
You hear a piece of advice, you dismiss it by saying, "it can only work in America, not here."
Someone told you they got their job without any connections in Nigeria, you say, that was then, that today, you can't get a job without connections.
Then you see someone, today, in Nigeria, get a job, you say but they finished with a First Class.
Then someone with a 2:1 did it, you say, but they are young.
Then another, you say, but they are a lady. People help ladies.
I hope you do know that there is no prize for the person that can come up with the best excuse?
At some point, you will need to look yourself in the mirror and say, "if it is to be, it is up to me."
The day you do that is your morning.
Good morning in advance 🙏
If you are a fresh graduate, I highly recommend getting a 9-5 job.
The obvious reasons are that you need the money and network and technical know-how.
But another less-talked-about reason is that it’s good for you to actually experience how an organization works.
You learn hierarchy of command, decorum, standard operating procedures, how to investigate failures, how to react to a dynamic environment, how to communicate, how to reward/punish, and so on.
For better or worse, 95% of the way I approach business is copied from Shell.
I simply don’t know how else to run a company. So I do what I’ve seen work for 12 years.
Of course, my business is different from Shell’s so I adjust as needed but the principle and the philosophy carry through.
Some people got born into a family with a long rich history of business/entrepreneurship and maybe even went straight to get an MBA. These folks may start a business fresh out of school and reasonably be expected to succeed.
But if you are like most of us, then I recommend working for someone else for a while.
Made a very big business mistake today.
Went to show a prospect a property my company has for sale.
He appeared to like the property.
To entertain the prospect and make him feel at home so the discussions and transaction can go smooth, I offered to take him to my personal residence in a nearby estate for lunch 😊
He changed his mind and now wants a property in my own estate, which he considers better but where I don't have a property for sale.
Business lesson learnt. Never ever show a more beautiful place (that you don't have business interest in) to a prospect in the middle of a transaction.
Na why some people dey hide their (more beautiful) friend during talking stage be this. 😭
I for no offer to take the prospect to my estate.
The company I worked in had 3 rounds of layoffs in my 10 years there.
Here are my observations in general
1. If your department is getting too big with many people being recruited, be careful. During layoff, your department’s hair may be the first to be shaved. There were only 2 of us in tax. About the only department not affected in all the three rounds. A number game.
2. If you are doing same work and your pay is continuously rising due to general annual payrises over time, egungun be careful. A young guy that will do that work for less your pay and grow may be favoured during layoff
3. If you are in Admin and other less technical roles, be careful. Especially if your pay is high
4. If you have had issue with a senior Oga before, be careful
5. If you have great interpersonal skills, it may save you. Grapevine had it that someone was in the layoff list until the eve of the layoff day was spared because of this soft skill. Name removed and they were posted to another department where their non-technical but human skill was considered a strength.
6. If you are multi-talented, it may save you. If you’re an accountant, for example, be the MC at your corporate event, volunteer for roles, participate in other activities. Don't likit yourself to accounting job.
7. Corporate institutional memory residing in you may also save you. You led an ERP change process? You led a major project? You’re the go-to for some fixes? But this may not be enough if a younger guy that worked with you is considered ripe enough.
8. Finally, plenty bootlicking . But not always enough. In fact, it may work against you if power changes hands and the camp you have been bootlicking are gradually eased out. I know someone stuck in one role because of this.
I first posted this last year.
