🚨NEW: An Israeli district court in Beersheba ruled Tuesday to extend the detention of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, under the so-called “Unlawful Combatants Law” — with no formal charges filed and no time limit set, his family announced.

Israel’s Physicians for Human Rights (PHRI) stated that authorities indicated that the latest extension is “indefinite.”The court rejected the defense’s request for immediate release.

Dr. Abu Safiya has been held since December 2024 when he refused to abandon his patients and continued his medical duties during Israeli attacks on and around the hospital.

Dr. Abu Safiya’s lawyer, who has been barred from visiting him for more than two months, says he is being held in Ketziot Prison in the Negev under harsh conditions. He is being denied his basic medications and necessary medical care despite continuous deterioration in his health.

His family called the ruling “a grave violation of international humanitarian law” and demanded his immediate and unconditional release.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ Israel is also detaining 13 other doctors alongside dozens of nurses and paramedics from Gaza.
