🟣燃えるような赤い目が特徴的である『ミミジロカイツブリ』という水鳥を捉えた写真。

単に赤いだけでなく黒い複雑な網目模様や斑点が虹彩の中に広がっている様子が克明に写し出されており、自然が作り出した神秘的な造形美として大きく話題となった

この赤い虹彩は、特定の波長の光をフィルタリングする効果を持ち、これにより薄暗く濁った水中でも光のコントラストと動体視力を最大限に高めることができ、素早く動く獲物の位置を正確に捉えられるようになる。

また『成熟度のシグナル』や『求愛』のためにも使用され、この赤い瞳を輝かせ、頭の白い羽を逆立てることで『自分は健康で、子育てをする準備が整った優秀な大人』ということを周囲の異性やライバルに強烈にアピールする
