FM doc advocating for docs, med studs, & healthcare professionals so that we can heal ourselves & our profession. Taking gap year after residency to heal myself
Today I gave the 1st Emotional Intelligence Workshop for interns/med studs at my residency program. Today's workshop was about emotional self-awareness. We started w/ interactive game & case study, also gave this out to track moods - thanks @gretchemaben for the graphic! Success!
@HarryZeitMD These things (esp time) costs $. If there were systems that believed in this whole-person centered wellness, I would think they would have worked on the upstream causes of burnout in the 1st place- like automatically offering paid leave 4 instance, or getting rid of 24 hr shifts
🚨🚨🚨BREAKING: Gavin Newsom announces that California will become the FIRST state in the nation to officially propose an Amendment to the United States Constitution to end the nation’s gun violence crisis.
California will offer four widely supported gun safety measures:
1) Raising the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21
2) Universal background checks
3) A reasonable waiting period for gun purchases
4) Banning civilian purchases of assault weapons
Smash the heart if you agree every state in the union should approve this! 💙
It’s time for Congress to act!
@HarryZeitMD Like everyday in residency....As an attending now, I try to embed my personality more into my practice. I like to laugh and joke around with patients, it puts us both in a better place and more open to each other
@HarryZeitMD Thank you! Yes, I thought it was good too :-) I grew to miss my patients, and now I love talking to them again. It was a joy to come back. I love hearing their stories, and am learning to balance it again
What an amazing idea!! The gratitude poncho - I will have to try that one of these days. If anyone has done this, feel free to share your experience with it.
A physician health program that tells you (& I'm a therapist!) that when you're burned out, you need therapy & yoga (I won't even touch on 'mindfulness') is a lie. You need time off to recover.
Then therapy & embodied practice to support the recovery, 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒊𝒕.
@ScottVernaglia Thank you so much for this! This is the way to lead into the future! If the current leaders can't model good behavior, how can we expect trainees to do so? ❤️💪🩺
@HomelEssdocCAN I am grateful for my sister, for all the time I could take off to heal & get ready for my next chapter, all the folks who are helping me in my job search, & to my increasing ability to let my intuition and the universe guide me where I need to be. Thx 4 the prompt 4 reflection🙏
@HomelEssdocCAN Of course you're right. It can definitely be straightforward. Didn't mean to minimize or group everything into one bucket. Sometimes bad stuff just happens, over which you have limited, or no control.
@HomelEssdocCAN Pain is indeed a messenger, it beckons us to explore, act...there is a saying in ISTDP that says "all roads lead to Rome"....underneath the present layers, could be echoes of the past that are not yet consciously known...can chat more offline sometime if you like ❤️🙏
@HomelEssdocCAN I would say there's probably something about ur past that would make this blanketing of your rage a protective thing for you. It's something to explore - I'm learning this therapy, ISTDP, that goes deeper -experientially you can uncover that rage so you can harness its full power
@HomelEssdocCAN Perhaps take some time to feel the rejection/rage, and then use that as fuel; take a deep breath, visualize in your mind the vision you have set forth, and use that for strength to rise again. For the world does need you! ❤️💪
@HarryZeitMD So true! I learned this from my experience at Esalen, and ever since I have been taking great pains to allow the groups that I am part of to feel as safe as possible, both for my own healing and that of others. It's been a wild ride!
@HarryZeitMD I know right?? Like it's as if Freud felt so impotent in his life from the influence of his mother, that he had to project strength onto the male and ignored women & their personhood altogether. It comes down to Freud's relationship with his mother and how it colored EVERYTHING
