Breaking down the violence in Southern Syria

Southern Syria's Sweida province has plunged into chaos as fierce fighting between Druze militias and Bedouin tribal fighters enters its second week. Over 300 people have been killed and nearly 80,000 civilians displaced, with basic services collapsing in the region.

The Syrian army initially withdrew but has since redeployed in an effort to restore control. Hospitals are reporting critical shortages of fuel, medicine, and electricity, while many roads remain blocked by armed groups.

Tensions escalated further when Israel launched airstrikes targeting Syrian military convoys in Sweida and Damascus, claiming it was acting to protect Druze communities. The strikes left at least 3 dead and dozens injured, drawing strong condemnation from Syrian officials.

A U.S.-brokered ceasefire was announced earlier this week with backing from Jordan and Turkey. However, hopes for calm didn’t last long. Clashes broke out again just hours later, with no clear path to peace in sight.

Trump Threatens 30% Tariff on EU Goods – Tensions Rise
