Last night we joined our colleagues with @mdyouthjustice to speak truth to power about the harsh realities of kids automatically charged as adults in Maryland. Sen @Willcsmithjr is championing this cause and we are proud to stand alongside him in this fight for justice.
Today is International Human Rights Day. I'm thinking a lot about the vulnerable children in our country who are abused, exploited, and treated as disposable within our criminal justice system.

70% of youth tried as adults were physically & emotionally abused. 45% were sexually abused. 37% were trafficked. Parents were absent, abusive, addicted, or incarcerated in 83% of these cases. Its not an excuse, but why we should treat kids different.

Policy in Focus: Eliminating Lifetime Parole for Children
Kids who have been incarcerated and worked hard to demonstrate maturity, rehabilitation, and readiness to re-enter society deserve the chance to live freely.
Let’s give children the real second chance they’ve earned.
Children’s rights are violated by governments, corporations, and individuals around the world. Our work exists to change that.
Together, we’re building a world where children are treated with the dignity they deserve.
3 for 3! Grateful to work alongside Senator Gabbard and staff and board members at @HRFK_ORG to help pass meaningful reforms this year!
Thank you @thejusttrust@TowFdn@AECFNews for supporting our work that made this possible!
The 4th state to ban incarceration in adult jails
Hawaii SB 694 has been SIGNED into law 🌺✊
This bill ensures that youth are protected from the trauma, violence, and isolation of adult incarceration.
Mahalo to @GovJoshGreenMD and all our partners for making this possible!
“Punishing a child that doesn’t fully understand the consequences of their actions makes no legal sense. Which is why this is also viewed as a human rights violation by the United Nations.”
