@mercnews Thank you for the thoughtful editorial and for highlighting the serious spending problem in Santa Clara County. Your analysis helps make it clear: Measure A isn’t the solution — voters should vote NO and demand real budget discipline first.

Local Elected Political Leaders Oppose Measure A, Citing Lack of Accountability
@lydia_kou@lizlawler4AD28 "Measure A claims the funding is for county medical, yet there is talk about funding a whole array of services..."
@LopezforCA@RobMooreLG@losgatan No more tax increase! The country needs to cut its budget on health care - currently at 54% of expenditures. https://t.co/YfYg08NBrC
@patwaite And the flyer is misleading. Measure A goes to a general fund, and there is no requirement for it to spend on hospitals. It's just a blank check for the county
@GuyMarzorati Measure A goes to the general fund, not a tax legally tied or restricted to use for healthcare. The SC County hospital system has expanded (or been budgeted to expand) quickly, and that the county should cut cost and improve efficiency.
In Hong Kong, pro-government political orgs often spam politically-charged events with witless bodies who, when asked, have no clue what they’re even attending. But at a criminal trial it means the defendants’ families won’t be able to sit in court. That’s unbelievably cruel.
@KarenGrepin It's the same argument.... slow down the spread and not to overload the US healthcare system. The "tripledemic" has been over over the news in different parts of U.S. recently

@KarenGrepin I think the lack of transparency caused more fear than the actual spread ..... if China releases the sequencing data of "all" the variants found locally, the world will be more prepared. For example, they can analyze if Paxlovid is still effective
The United States condemns the grossly unjust outcome of Jimmy Lai’s latest trial sentencing. By any objective measure, this result is neither fair nor just. We once again call on PRC authorities to respect freedom of expression, including for the press, in Hong Kong.
@tobeequal@elonmusk Smart businessman but kowtow to communist China. If he respects the rights and thoughts of Taiwan people, I will be rooting for him

@bencowling88 Poor children will suffer the most for all these measures. Rich families can afford private tutors and after school activities while the underprivileged kids had nowhere else to go after school
@lukedepulford @Afzal4Gorton @HouseofCommons Thanks Luke for the update. It's a pity that a barbarian type of regime decided to take advantage of the international norm (i.e. diplomatic exemption) to get away with their crimes.
This is the image that prompted the literal Chinese Consul General in Manchester to physically assault protestors. The Manchester Chinese Consulate has defended itself by arguing the image is “unacceptable.” Please share it to annoy them
Awful, credible reports that the Chinese Consul General in Manchester, Zheng Xiyuan, has been personally involved in vandalism and possible assault.
If so @JamesCleverly should put in an official request for him to leave his post and return home.
