Another revealing investigative piece by @Briancbs4 at @CBSNewsColorado 👀
Denver taxpayers are footing $800/hour legal bills while the city faces a $200M deficit and lays off workers.
CBS reports the City Attorney’s Office has paid Wheeler Trigg O’Donnell nearly $852,000 in just four months (almost double the $470,000 annual contract cap) to defend two employee lawsuits.
Four lawyers billed at $800/hour (including one who graduated law school only two years ago) and paralegals at $375/hour, even though Denver already has roughly 160 in-house lawyers, including an employment law team. Average Colorado lawyer rates sit around $321/hour.
Aurora’s city attorney called these rates “unconscionable for tax dollars.”
A former Denver City Attorney’s Office lawyer called it a “huge red flag” and said the city “isn’t minding the store.”
Johnston signed the contract in June 2026 authorizing up to $470,000 through March 2027, but the bills already blew past that by.
There was no formal RFP. Just an “informal qualification review” of four firms, with the city REFUSING to name the competitors or their proposed rates.
City Attorney Miko Brown was a partner at the same firm (Wheeler Trigg O’Donnell) from 2007–2017. She later served as Associate General Counsel at Airbnb before Johnston appointed her in 2025.
When CBS asked whether she was part of the five-person selection panel, recommended WTO, or helped negotiate the $800 rates, she simply DID NOT ANSWER. She also declined an interview on the spending, saying she had “no spare time.” 🙄
The office insists she “receives no benefit” while taxpayers are left to wonder how independent that process really was.
Miko Brown’s resume includes a stint as Associate General Counsel at Airbnb, a company in which Reid Hoffman is a major investor.
Hoffman happens to be one Johnston’s biggest donors, millions into an IEC that backed Johnston’s mayoral run.
Hoffman has also publicly admitted he visited Jeffrey Epstein’s private island in 2014.
In early 2025, Denver also spent $2M with Covington & Burling at $1,000/hour to prep Johnston for a single hearing on sanctuary cities.
What the West Still Doesn’t Get It:
Communism’s True Core: The Systemic Lie
Most people in the West think they understand communism. They picture bread lines, gulags, failed five-year plans, and the collapsed Soviet Union. They treat it as a discredited economic theory – an experiment that proved that abolishing private property doesn’t work. Case closed, history moved on.
This misunderstanding may be the most dangerous intellectual failure of our time.
Communism was never primarily an economic system. Economics was the surface. Beneath it lay something far more insidious: a total, systemic, institutionalized commitment to lying. Not occasional dishonesty. Not spin or propaganda in the ordinary sense. Something deeper – a civilizational war against truth itself, waged through every institution, every classroom, every newspaper, every conversation, until reality itself became negotiable and the lie became the air people breathed.
The Words We’re Missing
The Polish language, forged by decades of living under this system, produced words for this phenomenon that English simply cannot match:
Zakłamanie [zah-kwah-MAH-nyeh] – a state of total, pervasive, socially embedded falsehood, a condition in which an entire society is saturated with lies so thoroughly that truth becomes almost inaccessible.
Obłuda [ob-woo-dah] – a deep, performative hypocrisy, the gap between what is proclaimed and what is actually practiced, the mask worn so long it begins to feel like a face.
These are not words for individual liars. They describe a system – a mode of social organization built on organized mendacity, where the lie is not the exception but the foundation. English has no single word for either concept, and that linguistic gap is not a coincidence. It reflects a gap in experience. Cultures that did not live under communism lack the vocabulary because they lack the wound.
And because they lack the vocabulary, they struggle to recognize the thing when it reappears in new clothing.
The Continuity: Communism, Leftism, Wokeism
What we call wokeism today, or the broader radical left, is not a new phenomenon. It is the same operating system running on updated hardware. The specifics have changed – instead of the proletariat, we have marginalized identity groups; instead of bourgeois class enemies, we have racists and transphobes; instead of socialist realism, we have DEI statements. But the deep structure is the same.
That deep structure is this: truth is not discovered, it is assigned. Reality is not something to be understood honestly but something to be narrated strategically. Language is not a tool for communication but a weapon of power. And anyone who resists the approved narrative is not simply wrong – they are dangerous, and must be silenced, shamed, or destroyed.
This is zakłamanie in its modern form. This is obłuda wearing a human rights badge.
The same movement that insists men can become women will insist, with equal fervor, that questioning this is an act of violence. The same institutions that claim to champion free inquiry systematically suppress dissent. The same people who invoke tolerance as their highest value are among the most intolerant forces in public life. The contradiction is not accidental – it is structural. It is the system working as designed.
Why the West Still Doesn’t Get It
People who grew up in freedom tend to assume, at some level, that bad actors know they are lying. That somewhere behind the ideological performance, there is a cynical operator who privately acknowledges reality. This assumption is wrong, and it is why Westerners consistently underestimate what they are dealing with.
The totalitarian lie, at its mature stage, is not cynical. It is believed. Or rather, it creates a condition in which the distinction between belief and performance collapses entirely. People learn to say things they do not believe so fluently, and for so long, that they lose access to what they actually think.

Welcome to Colorado, where Walmart greeter Grandma's are forced to wear body cameras for their own safety.
I find this to be absolutely insane, let's fight back: https://t.co/DQJ1v1KvXA

Right before 5pm today, the California Energy Commission’s spokesperson sent me an email urging me to “consider taking a different tone” w/ my reporting on state’s new tire rules.
Here’s the email and info for you to consider. Note: commissioners haven’t disputed 70% figure.
Let me see if I get this. A state representative gets state taxpayer money for her not-for-profit, that pays her a $133k salary. (And this is legal?) Then her nonprofit gives our taxpayer money to buy signatures to raise our taxes? #coleg#copolitics
Rep. Garcia’s nonprofit has been very gracious to the Initiative 195 effort. https://t.co/CBUsgZJ3H3
The Colorado Chamber reports that 65% of businesses with fewer than 100 employees rank regulations among their top three challenges.
Small businesses don't have armies of lawyers and compliance officers.
If we want more local jobs and more Main Street success stories, we need simpler rules, not more paperwork.
So the report taxpayers paid $25k for has likely been destroyed… this is the latest update in the FOIA request. The consultant who worked on the report has retired and apparently deleted all her electronic files and shredded her paper files. How convenient.
It’s unlikely we will ever see a copy of this report but I’d love a better explanation from Jena Griswold as to why she did not retain a copy…
This is the difference in hospitality when you visit an American BBQ restaurant vs a restaurant in a Somali Muslim area
You can’t watch this video and come to any other conclusion other than we do not want this in our country. We need mass deportations
The fact that this even exists in America should horrify every American
Keep in mind when journalist @David_Khait is harassed and told he must leave the area, he’s not doing anything that should cause a confrontation. He is simple visiting an area in Georgia called “Little Somalia” and ordering food, he sits down and eats it. He causes zero problems yet is told he’s not welcome there. They even reference his white skin color as a reason he can’t be there
🚨 OMG. Sec. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. exposes that the Biden admin REMOVED 90%+ PERCENT of the 80 people at HHS who oversaw anti-fraud efforts for $2.2 trillion in payments
$2.2 TRILLION DOLLARS TREATED LIKE IT'S NOTHING!! TENS of billions LOST
Xavier Becerra allowed mass fraud.
"When I came in, there's only 6 people who are in charge of all program integrity for my department!"
"My predecessor, Xavier Becerra, when he came into my agency, there were only 80 people in program integrity, 80 people. This is for 50 states and five territories. These are the people who are monitoring $2.2 trillion dollars in payments annually from my agency!"
"We do 4 million transactions a day. There's only 80 people looking at those. Xavier Becerra came in and transferred 76 of them out!"
"And it was an invitation for the fraudsters to come in and steal everything!"
"And that's why we have this hospice program! We've closed thousands of hospices here in Los Angeles. Because they didn't have patients. They were just billing us $6,000 a month for phony accounts!"
"And the durable medical equipment fraud, tens of billions of dollars here in Los Angeles County. Autism services, tens of billions of dollars all stolen because nobody was minding the STORE!"
BETRAYAL.
Don't tell me how to be a Black woman! Taking hormones are optional. The idea that a Trans woman has to subject herself to BIG PHARMA, is just another way for cis normative people to turn us into a commodity. I’m an ALL NATURAL Black trans lesbian with a penile aesthetic.

"They're more scared of Treasury than the War Department."
Hamas agreed to disarm. Israel and Lebanon are talking after 30 years.
The decisive weapon in the Middle East wasn't a bomb.
For those that still don’t understand what Benghazi was all about:
🚨So here's the REAL story:
Ambassador Stevens was sent to Benghazi to secretly retrieve US made Stinger Missiles that the State Dept had supplied to Ansar al Sharia in Libya WITHOUT Congressional oversight or permission.
Sec State Hillary Clinton had brokered the Libya deal through Ambassador Stevens and a Private Arms Dealer named Marc Turi, but some of the shoulder fired Stinger Missiles ended up in Afghanistan where they were used against our own military. On July 25th, 2012, a US Chinook helicopter was downed by one of them. Not destroyed only because the idiot Taliban didn't arm the missile. The helicopter didn't explode, but it had to land and an ordnance team recovered the missile’s serial number which led back to a cache of Stinger Missiles kept in
Qatar by the CIA.
Obama and Hillary were in full panic mode, so Ambassador Stevens was sent to Benghazi to retrieve the rest of the Stinger Missiles. This was a "do-or-die" mission, which explains the Stand Down Orders given to multiple rescue teams during the siege of the US Embassy.
It was the State Dept, NOT the CIA, that supplied the Stinger Missiles to our sworn enemies because Gen. Petraeus at CIA would not approve supplying the deadly missiles due to their potential use against commercial aircraft. So then, Obama threw Gen. Petraeus under the bus when he refused to testify in support of Obama’s phony claim of a “spontaneous uprising caused by a YouTube video that insulted Muslims.”
Obama and Hillary committed TREASON!
THIS is what the investigation is all about, WHY she had a Private Server, (in order to delete the digital evidence), and WHY Obama, two weeks after the attack, told the UN that the attack was the result of the YouTube video, even though everyone KNEW it was not.
Furthermore, the Taliban knew that the administration had aided and abetted the enemy WITHOUT Congressional oversight or permission, so they began pressuring (blackmailing) the Obama Administration to release five Taliban generals being held at Guantanamo.
Bowe Bergdahl was just a useful pawn used to cover the release of the Taliban generals. Everyone knew Bergdahl was a traitor but Obama used Bergdahl’s exchange for the five Taliban generals to cover that Obama was being coerced by the Taliban about the unauthorized Stinger Missile deal.
So we have a traitor as POTUS that is not only corrupt, but compromised, as well and a Sec of State that is a serial liar, who perjured herself multiple times at the Congressional Hearings on Benghazi. Perhaps this is why no military aircraft were called upon for help in Benghazi: because the administration knew that our enemies had Stinger Missiles that, if used to down those planes, would likely be traced back to the CIA cache in Qatar and then to the State Dept’s illegitimate arms deal in Libya.
Forward this again and again and again until everyone reads the true story of Benghazi.
One of the cleanest experiments in history already settled the economic debate on capitalism vs. socialism.
Same Germans, same starting line in 1949, the only variable was the system they lived under.
West Germany under Ludwig Erhard abolished the old price controls and introduced a new currency in 1948 and industrial production jumped 50% in 6 months.
East Germany went Soviet-style central planning with the state controlling prices, production, and property.
By 1989, East Germany’s GDP per capita sat at about $9,679 while West Germany’s was roughly 3x higher, and at reunification in 1990, East German output per capita was only 55% of the West’s.
The wall fell, but the gap never closed up to this day. All to say it’s been easier to recover from an atomic bomb than years of socialist rule.
The gun is the most misunderstood object in Western civilization. Not a weapon. A technology. The technology that made the idea of equality physically real.
1. The longbow democratized warfare – a peasant could kill a knight with a stick and a string, and Agincourt proved it. The gun completed the process. The armored warrior class whose claim to social dominance rested on physical superiority became obsolete. The aristocratic monopoly on violence ended not with a philosophy but with a mechanism. The gun is the physical enforcement of the idea that all men are created equal. Which is why the American founders put it in the second amendment – not as an afterthought, but as the guarantee of everything else.
2. The Roman citizen had the right to bear arms. The Greek citizen had it. The English yeoman had it. The Swiss canton built its entire civilization on it. The disarming of the population has always been, in every civilization, in every century, the first act of the government that intends to stop being answerable to that population. Show me a disarmed population and I will show you a population that lost something else shortly after.
3. The Second Amendment is not about hunting. It is not about sport. It is about the relationship between the armed citizen and the state – the explicit constitutional acknowledgment that the citizen’s right to defend himself, his family, and his civilization against any threat, including the government itself, is not granted by the state and cannot be revoked by it. Power flows upward from the armed citizen, not downward from the armed state.
4. The gun defends the family. The woman alone with her children. The farmer on the edge of civilization. The shopkeeper in the neighborhood the police no longer patrol. The gun is the equalizer – the technology that makes the physical difference between a large man and a small woman irrelevant. Every argument for disarmament is, at its core, an argument that the state will protect you better than you can protect yourself. The evidence for this proposition is not encouraging.
5. In Europe, the disarmament is now nearly complete – and it happened precisely as the state’s ability and willingness to protect its citizens began to decline. The timing is not coincidental. A population that cannot defend itself must trust the state to defend it – which is a population that cannot effectively question whether the state is doing so. The dependency is the design.
6. The gun is a civilizational technology in the deepest sense: it requires responsibility, judgment, and the willingness to accept the consequences of your decisions. You cannot outsource it. You cannot have a committee fire it. It is the most anti-bureaucratic object ever invented – a direct, personal, consequential instrument that puts the full weight of the decision on the individual holding it. Which is precisely why the administrative state finds it intolerable. Not because it is dangerous. Because it is sovereign.
7. The family that can defend itself does not depend on the state for its most fundamental security. The civilization that can defend itself has not yet outsourced its survival to an institution that will negotiate the terms of that survival on its own behalf. The gun determines who controls violence – and therefore who controls everything that violence can threaten. Which is everything. The Sobieski who rode down the hill had a sword and sixty thousand horsemen. The equivalent today is the armed citizen who understands what he is defending and why. Every civilization that forgot this discovered it the hard way. The ones that remembered it are still here.
