I was thinking about our name, Nigeria, so I decided to Google why it was named that, and I found something that shocked me.

Nigeria was named after the Niger River, and everyone knows that, but the question is: why was the river named Niger? The River Niger is not black, so why was it given that name? The Latin word for black is niger (related to negro), so apparently Flora Shaw, in 1897, named our country Niger-ia, which literally means “black land” or “land of black people.”

This feels like racism at its peak, and we accepted such a representation of our people from the British. Nigeria was never originally intended to be the name of a country.

Who named it Niger, can't you get the message I'm trying to pass along. Before the British came we had our own name for it but they colonized us and gave it a racist name black river ( river Niger) it was called “gher n-gheren” by tuareg people living in northern Nigeria along the borders. Why not just call it a river or something else , why black river when the river is not black.

I love how igbo people vehemently reject anything isl@m. Once you become a musl!m or even marry a muslim, they will never involve you in core family matters again. You will not even be able to attend the same meeting with your kinsmen. It is that serious for us ✊️
