On this day in 1820, George Hearst was born. Hearst was a miner and businessman who is still recognized for the development and expansion of Homestake Mine. The mine closed down in 2002, but was the largest and deepest gold mine in North America during its operating lifetime.

One of the greatest gold pockets of all time was discovered in the wall of an entrance to the mine, For 80 years, miners walked past it, but thanks to someone finally digging a foot in the opposite direction, this treasure was uncovered.

Every beam was carefully placed by skilled hands in cramped, dimly lit quarters, often hundreds of feet below ground. The scene shows not only the physical demands of mining during the early 20th century but also the reliance on traditional craftsmanship and acute engineering instincts before the advent of modern machinery.

The Homestake Mine, already renowned by the early 1900s as one of America’s richest and longest-operating gold mines, became a cornerstone of economic life in the Black Hills. At its height, it employed a large, tight-knit workforce whose livelihoods depended on both the yield of the mine and their own cooperation underground. The photograph offers more than just a look at wood and rock—it gives a glimpse into the daily reality of these miners, where camaraderie and trust were necessities, not luxuries.
