On this day in 1820, George Hearst was born. Hearst was a miner and businessman who is still recognized for the development and expansion of Homestake Mine. The mine closed down in 2002, but was the largest and deepest gold mine in North America during its operating lifetime.
South Dakota was a leading gold producer in the US, thanks to the Homestake Mine.
It was the longest and deepest gold mine in North America until it closed in 2002.
It produced more than 40 million ounces of gold in its history.
This is what natural native gold looks like, found in the Colorado Quartz Mine, Mariposa County, California, USA.
One of the greatest gold pockets of all time was discovered in the wall of an entrance to the mine, For 80 years, miners walked past it, but thanks to someone finally digging a foot in the opposite direction, this treasure was uncovered.

Here’s a great opalized petrified wood from Virgin Valley, NV. It’s Miocene age and there are mining sites there where you can pay to find your own. This one is kept in water to help prevent crazing (cracks) since opal is water-rich #fossilfriday
Museum Quality piece of old time 1960s APACHE AGATE from Chihuahua, Mexico, now only seen in Museums and old collections. The last mining efforts of the late 90's did not produce anything worthwhile. This one coming soon on our Etsy! #apacheagate#agate#mexicanagate#rockhound

The Black Hills have a rich history of gold mining. Dakota Gold is committed to carrying that forward in a way that reclaims land and actually makes the Hills more beautiful. They briefed me and showed me their office space.
I was impressed by the potential for the future of gold mining in the Black Hills — and the economic benefit for our state as a result.

DID YOU KNOW: Sanford Lab in South Dakota was once America's deepest gold mine but is now home to a research facility nearly 5,000ft (equivalent of more than 6 Empire State Buildings) below ground. The lab studies dark matter, and the depth protects the research from cosmic rays
Opalized tree trunk from Virgin Valley, Nevada. It’s the US’s main source of precious opal and most of it involves opal replaced petrified wood. This area has been mined for over a century.
Opalized petrified wood from Virgin Valley, Nevada. The area had forests and marshes that were buried in volcanic ash 15 million years ago. The logs there became petrified wood with veins of opal from the wet rich silica. Yes you can go find this stuff yourself!
