Donovan Chimhandamba, the Zimbabwean-born chief executive of South African-based Nyanza Light Metals, a manufacturer of titanium dioxide pigment and other chemicals, says his company wants to create a beneficiation and value addition industry of the mineral in Africa.
This value proposition is premised on the idea that Africa, and more specifically South Africa, has an abundance of titanium minerals, but very little value addition is done on
the continent.
South Africa is the second largest producer of titanium-bearing minerals in the world
after Australia, accounting for about 22% of 6.1 Mt global production.
In South Africa, titanium economic minerals, ilmenite and rutile, are produced from the extensive beach placer deposits located along the eastern, southern and northeastern coasts with minute deposits along the west coast, north of Cape Town.
Titanium minerals are recovered at three major mines namely, Richard’s Bay Minerals’ Tisand (Pty) Ltd and Exxaro’s Hillendale and Namakwa Sands mines.
CNBC Africa’s Godfrey Mutizwa spoke to Chimhandamba about the project on the sidelines of this year's Africa Investment Forum in Rabat, Morocco.
The ambitious project requires US$860 million in funding and aims to bridge the gap between raw mineral extraction and value-added products in Africa, specifically South Africa.
Nyanza is focusing not only on the titanium pigment project, but also on a long-term strategy that includes a lithium ion phosphate plant, emphasising the industrialisation of the African continent.
The project is expected to create economic opportunities by reducing the export-import value gap and providing quality jobs in the region, ultimately unlocking further industrial projects for Africa.
Chimhandamba says:
"Beyond the titanium pigment project, we are strategically planning for the future with a broader vision that includes the construction of a lithium ion phosphate plant. This long-term strategy is designed to not only advance the titanium pigment project, but also to pave the way for further industrial projects in Africa."
Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2018 got a timely, yet friendly warning in Bulawayo over the impact of the Kazungula project and the fast-changing regional geoeconomic landscape from the Diaspora Infrastructure Development Group chief executive Donovan Chimhandamba.
The time we wanted to invest in National Railways Zimbabwe (NRZ) everyone thought we wanted to take the parastatal and make it our own says Donovan Chimhandamba, Founder and CEO, Nyanza Light Metals.

"Cabinet approved the submission of the Water Services Amendment Bill to Parliament. The Bill aims to strengthen the regulation and management of water services as well as improve compliance with the Water Services Act, 1997 (Act 108 of 1997).
The amendments to the Water Services Act introduces reforms to address the non-separation of Water Services Authorities (WSA) and Water Services Providers (WSP) functions by municipalities, by providing greater clarity regarding the Parliament functions of each, address poor performance of the WSPs by introducing a legal requirement that WSAs may only appoint WSPs that have an operating license which requires a minimum level of competency issued by the DWS.
The amendments will also address weaknesses identified in the sector, including introduction of offences for non-compliance, norms and standards for intervention and minimum standards for the functioning of water services providers, which must be enforced by water services authorities." #GovZAUpdates
