Europe leads the world in the number of crypto-friendly banks 🙌

Most people are surprised when I share this, but it’s true—and upcoming changes next year could make it even easier for crypto firms.

Why?

• One of MiCA’s explicit goals is to support regulated crypto firms by ensuring better access to banking services so they can operate smoothly.
• Starting next year, non-bank payment companies, including stablecoin issuers, will be eligible to apply for direct access to central bank payment systems (e.g., SEPA). This means they could settle funds independently, without relying on traditional banks.

In my latest article "A Transatlantic Gap: How EU Rules Foster Banking Access for Crypto and Fintech vs. Operation Chokepoint 2.0", I argue that this European head start is happening thanks to, and not despite of, EU rules on payments competition this last decade.
