Czesława Kwoka, a 14‑year‑old Polish girl, was murdered at the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp on March 12, 1943. She was killed by an injection of phenol directly into her heart.

Just before her death, she was photographed by fellow prisoner Wilhelm Brasse, who later testified that the SS guard struck her in the face before the photo was taken, the bruise on her lip is visible in the image.

In that haunting portrait, we see the terrified face of a child who did not speak German and had lost her mother only days earlier. Czesława was one of approximately 230,000 children and young people murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The original black‑and‑white photograph, preserved at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim, was later colorized by Brazilian artist Marina Amaral, who was deeply moved by Czesława’s image and sought to share it with the world in color.

Researchers sequenced the oldest human genome ever recovered from Ireland and what they found upended everything we thought we knew about who the Irish actually are.

Her name isn't known. Researchers call her the Ballynahatty woman. She was found in 1855 inside a megalithic passage tomb in County Down, near Belfast, and in 2015 Trinity College Dublin sequenced her entire genome, the first high-coverage ancient DNA sequence ever recovered from prehistoric Ireland. What her DNA showed was not what anyone expected.

She had black hair and brown eyes. Her ancestry traced predominantly to Near Eastern farmers who had originally migrated out of what is now Turkey, Lebanon, and Syria, moving slowly northwest across Europe over thousands of years until they reached Ireland around 3,800 BC. She looked, researchers noted, most like a southern European or someone from the modern Middle East. Not like what most people picture when they imagine the ancient Irish.

It was her people who built Newgrange. It was her people who constructed the great passage tombs and stone circles that still stand across Ireland today. The pale skin, the blue eyes, the red hair that define the Irish in the popular imagination came later, carried by the Bronze Age steppe herders who arrived around 2,500 BC and genetically transformed the population. The woman who helped build the most sophisticated astronomical monument in prehistoric Europe looked nothing like the Irish stereotype. She was darker, older, and she got here first.

Her DNA is still partly in you if you have Irish ancestry. Diluted by two thousand years of migration that came after her, but present. The oldest layer of the Irish genome, the one that watched the solstice sun enter Newgrange on the morning it was built, came from a dark-haired woman from County Down whose ancestors walked to Ireland from Turkey.
