NPA Tells Parliament It Does Not Know How Many Foreign Nationals Were Granted Bail, Disappeared and Never Returned to Court

The National Prosecuting Authority has revealed it lacks records on foreign nationals granted bail who failed to return to court. In reply to a parliamentary question from ATM MP Mr V Zungula, the NPA disclosed limited data on foreign national cases but confirmed major gaps in monitoring absconders.

In the past financial year, the NPA recorded 1,074 new cases involving foreign nationals in Regional courts and 37,967 in District courts. The Electronic Case Management System captured these figures, yet prosecutors could not provide numbers of those granted bail who never reappeared.

Nationality details appear on the ECMS and Integrated Case Management System. However, this information does not indicate whether the accused were in South Africa legally or illegally. The NPA stated it maintains no electronic records linking bail outcomes to foreign nationals.

As a result, the NPA could not identify which nationalities had the highest number of absconders after bail. The department confirmed it is unable to supply the requested statistics on bail jumpers. "If the [NPA] cannot track foreign nationals who enter the criminal justice system, then who exactly is keeping score?" ATM Party asked

18-YEAR-OLD LEARNER MISSING, PHONE LAST SIGNAL IN DEEP JOHANNESBURG.

An 18 year old Nontsikelelo Maseko, a learner at Suiderlig High School, went missing on Tuesday morning while travelling to school from Vanderbijlpark.

She was last seen wearing her school uniform and is described as having knotless braids. According to her family, she left for school as usual but contact with her was later lost, raising concern about her whereabouts.

The situation became more worrying after her cellphone’s last known signal was traced to Benrose Supermarket in Deep City, Johannesburg, suggesting she may have travelled or been taken there before her phone became unreachable.

Her father, Mr Maseko, together with family friend Lebohang Mokoena, has since launched an urgent appeal to the public for help in locating her. The family is asking anyone with information that could assist in finding Nontsikelelo to come forward as the search continues.

Police have arrested a foreign national and recovered over R440 000 in drugs and other items in an operation this evening.

The Nigerian man was found in Lamontville, allegedly with cocaine.

He is linked to drug dealing in that area, as well as Umlazi, Chatsworth and Umbilo.

After he was interrogated, he led the team - consisting of the SAPS Economic Infrastructure Task Team, Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit, SAPS eThekwini District and Excellerate K9 Unit - to his flat in Umbilo.

There, officers found crystal meth, drug manufacturing equipment and cash.

The suspect’s passport and vehicle were also confiscated.

He is due in court soon.

UDM Deputy President Nqabayomzi Kwankwa has told President Cyril Ramaphosa that the UDM stands with South Africans on the growing issue of illegal immigration.

Kwankwa says the UDM is calling for the enforcement of South Africa’s laws, arguing that no country should be expected to turn a blind eye to undocumented immigrants.

He further stated that those questioning why marchers are not targeting white illegal immigrants should understand that communities are addressing the challenges they face directly, saying African immigrants are the ones most often competing with locals for jobs, housing, and participation in the local economy.

Kwankwa also argued that South Africa appears to be the only country where enforcing immigration laws is labelled as immoral, while other nations routinely enforce their immigration policies without facing the same criticism.
