Thank you @simonmaechling as I used this graph at the World Seed Congress in Barcelona to show that modern agricultural practices including plant breeding has saved an area half the size of Africa from the plough. Imagine the global consequences if we had not increased yield!
By improving yields per hectare we are able to spare land from conversion.
How much land has been spared thanks to yield improvements in wheat over the last 60 years?
> 1 billion hectares.
Good question. The answer is that this has been happening like this for many years. In the 1990’s I set up numerous trials of perennial cover crops like this in California Nappy Valley and central Valley. This was after successfully establishing this practice in Australia.
#DYK? Whether produced through traditional #plantbreeding, or through newer innovative breeding methods like #geneediting, all new plant varieties go through rigorous testing for safety and quality before their seeds are ever sold to farmers. #JustGrowIt

@SeedFed@MKeller_Seed In seed we are one global community doing everything we can to support the supply of healthy food. I send my hand of friendship to all those affected by the conflict in Ukraine and hopes for a speedy cessation of the conflict. When will we put community first and politics second?
