NEW: The @LibDems have called for an official inquiry into the Chancellor toasting his mini-budget with bankers.
"While struggling homeowners saw their mortgage bills spiral it seems the Chancellor was sipping champagne with hedge fund managers profiting from the falling pound."
Of all the words written about the catastrophe of the past week, this letter in the FT sums it up best of all. And it’s worse than we might have thought.
We appear to be in a position where the police could and perhaps should question the Chancellor of The Exchequer regarding his part in illegal insider trading.
France: fully nationalising its biggest energy supplier.
Spain: increasing taxes on the super-rich.
EU: imposing a windfall tax on the huge profits of energy companies.
The UK government’s response to the cost of living crisis: cutting taxes for the 1%.
One school in south-east London told the charity about a child who was “pretending to eat out of an empty lunchbox” because they did not qualify for free school meals and did not want their friends to know there was no food at home”
Utterly heartbreaking https://t.co/y6ep8yExML
Much debate around the "safety" of possible junior doctor strikes.
To be crystal clear: the dangers to patients of 12 years of NHS understaffing & despair, disillusionment & burnout are literally lethal.
Juniors, I'm only too happy to provide cover if you strike. Solidarity ✊
The “Conservative” party is not conserving anything.
Not our nature, our rivers, our coastline, our public services, our NHS, our standards & mores, our rights — the lot is for sale.
All those sycophants on the Tory benches who previously scorned public spending but are now dutifully endorsing the Truss/Kwarteng 'package' should be scarlet with shame. No decent person can stand by this epic national disgrace.
@premnsikka Ok… so who outside of Govt should be looking at this?
@NCA_UK?
@metpoliceuk?
@UKSFO?
Or are we just accepting that we live in a lawless and corrupt country now?
Truss/Kwarteng lifted the cap on bankers' bonus.
Few days earlier they met hedge-fund managers "and every one of them was shorting the pound".
It crashed after the budget. They made millions without producing anything, will collect big bonus & tax cuts.

The next time anyone argues we "can't afford the NHS", please remind them they "afforded" handing another £55,000 a year to those already earning £1 million.

Last week TV, radio and right wing rags barely touched the story of Truss chief of staff Fulbrook being quizzed by the FBI. Let’s see if they do any better with the story that his salary is paid for not by the government but a lobbying firm which lobbies the government. Corrupt
Kwarteng denies, straight to camera, that his tax cuts favour those at the top.
Given such a denial of plain fact - is there actually any point in interviewing him?
The reason why NHS doctors and public sector workers are getting nothing from this budget and bankers are getting everything is because Kwasi Kwarteng has been convinced for years that doctors are overpaid. Be in no doubt that he loves his own budget.
EXCL: Liz Truss chief of staff is being paid his salary via his lobbying firm and is only "seconded" to No10 in arrangement he won't explain
Mark Fullbrook says he's not using company for tax benefit days after govt junked IR35 reforms to make this easier

Uncapped bonuses for millionaire bankers whilst benefit claimants are blamed, shamed and threatened - that’s what the most vile and despicable of Governments do when there is no one else to blame for the mess they’ve created
