This was the most interesting to me. MLB says pitch velocity is the greatest driver of injury. And yet teams, at the college and pro levels, continue to prioritize velocity. Not only do kids emulate what they see, they train specifically for it.
This is baseball's brokenness.
Last night, I had the incredible opportunity to break down postseason games on Scott Van Pelt’s show on ESPN—a moment that still feels surreal. Growing up, I watched ESPN every day, dreaming about what it would be like to be one of the voices I listened to so intently. Fast forward, and here I am, living out my second dream as a broadcaster and analyst.
Working alongside people I grew up watching is a constant reminder that I’m on the right path. It took a lot of hard work, faith, and perseverance to make this transition from the field to the studio, but I want these moments to serve as an example to anyone chasing their passions.
You can be great at more than one thing. You don’t have to put yourself in a box. Keep pushing, keep learning, and keep believing in your ability to evolve and succeed in new arenas.
Grateful for every step of the journey and excited for what’s to come. ⚾️🎙️
Had a great time at the High School All-Star Game last Sunday playing against the best players in the state. Went 1-1 at the plate with 2 BBs and 2 runs scored. On the mound went 1 IP, 1H, 1R, 3Ks, 12 pitches (100 % strikes). Thank you to @Donnroach for an amazing event.
Much respect for The Baseball Lab and Futures All Star game. Players earned the right to play based on merit and performance. This was not a pay to play showcase event. #Integrity#Honor
I’m tired of hearing about pitch clock being the cause of injury. Now I’m sure it plays apart but the game has made guys chase velocity because that’s what seems to get rewarded. Why is is not okay to have low to mid 90s stuff and know how to actually pitch!! Those where the guys that gave me the hardest time, guys that could actually move the ball around change speeds and save that little extra until later in the game.
Don’t be fooled, here are the Average HS Fastballs by Grade:
HS Senior: 81 mph
HS Junior: 78 mph
HS Soph: 75 mph
HS Freshman: 71 mph
The avg FB in HS varsity games is 74-76 mph.
Top velo is NOT average velo & at 100 pitches (since kids aren’t in shape) their velos drop a ton.
Brice Matthews rankings on Perfect Game. Families spend 10’s of thousands of dollars on this stuff and get caught up in the rankings hype. Brice was the 18th pick in this years MLB Draft. Don’t put too much weight in this stuff. Find good competition. Play the game. Repeat.
“For those who want to know why scouts use a 20-80 scale, we have to take it back to the Legendary Branch Rickey, yes the one who signed Jackie Robinson.
Bear with me as I go a little AP stats on you. Branch Rickey created a numerical scale…”
