I’m pleading with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, @GovWike, to please look into the Social Welfare Department of the FCT and, most importantly, the rehabilitation centre for children living on the streets.

Last week, I visited the FCT Police Command,@FCT_PoliceNG where I met with the Commissioner of Police and the FCT Police PPRO. I was invited following a video I made about children who snatch people’s belongings on the streets, particularly around traffic.

When I got there, I realised that many of those arrested were actually children. I asked what would happen to them, and I was told that after they are arrested, they are handed over to the Social Welfare Department. However, somehow, some of these children eventually find their way back onto the streets.

The Commissioner of Police directed me to the Social Welfare Department to better understand what happens to these children. I was told that they are sometimes sent back to their respective states.

However, after further investigation, I discovered that the FCT has its own Social Welfare Department and a rehabilitation centre where some of these children can be taken in, rehabilitated, and allowed to become useful members of society.

I visited the facility myself, and what I saw was deeply concerning. The rehabilitation centre is in a very dilapidated condition.

So, I humbly appeal to the FCT Minister: please look into this facility and consider rehabilitating it. If we are serious about getting these children off the streets, we cannot simply arrest them and return them to the same environment that brought them there in the first place.

These are children. Some may have been influenced or used by older criminal elements, while others may have nowhere else to go.

Let us provide them with a safe environment, education, rehabilitation, skills, and proper guidance. If we save these children today, we may be preventing a much bigger problem tomorrow.

I sincerely hope the FCT Administration will look into this matter and take action.
