While I do have a bunch of #Riftbound QOTDs queued up, I always love having more questions. If you have any questions that you want to be featured in a QOTD, please send them my way by DMing me!
#Riftbound QOTD: Fae Dragon and another buffed unit is about to die at the same time. I use Sett's legend to save the buffed unit by spending the buff.
Does Fae Dragon trigger?
A: It is possible.
An important detail is that Nocturne received an errata to NO LONGER be a trigger; it is now a replacement effect. Nocturne is looked at and you decide to banish it instead. Since you banished it, you can now play Nocturne and add him to the chain as a pending item. That all happens at once. You then decide to play the Legion unit (from Hook), which also becomes a pending item.
Finalize up the chain: Nocturne (the card) is finalized first, you pay its cost (of just 1[A]) and it immediately enters the board. Legion is finalized next (free cost) and enters the board. Legion condition is then checked: A card was indeed finalized (Nocturne) and the card gains its Legion text.
Nocturne received this errata because his ability just does NOT WORK as a trigger. If Nocturne's "look" condition somehow was a trigger, what would happen is that its "look" trigger (not the card itself) and Legion unit becomes pending items. Both items would finalize, and the unit with Legion would resolve and be the first card played.
Thank you @GhaelWindss for the question! ^^
#Riftbound QOTD: I have yet to play any cards. I activate Baited Hook. I kill a 2[M] unit and in the 5 cards I look, I see a Nocturne Horrifying and a 3[M] unit with a Legion ability. Is it possible to use Legion?
(Let's assume a Yellow/Purple legend exists 🙃 @GhaelWindss)
A: It can be paid AFTER Ravenbloom resolves. Diana does NOT follow the “[Do X] to [Do Y]” templating of cost within instructions. Therefore, the [1] does not need to be paid on finalization. You only need to make the decision of whether you want to trigger Diana, and then on resolution can decide whether you want to tap a rune to execute the instruction (there’s a sidenote to this, however that is a tangent for the sake of this question).
In my personal opinion, I hope there is new templating for the decision to pay a cost during resolution. The status quo currently is currently unintuitive.
Congrats to @AlanzqTFT for another regional qualifier championship! Let's celebrate with a question related to his deck.
#Riftbound QOTD: My Diana Lunari is defending on Ravenbloom Conservatory. Am I paying [1] for Diana's ability BEFORE or AFTER Ravenbloom resolves?
A: It is only incorrect if you want to resolve the DK (Deathknell) item (play unit from hand) AFTER the move item (look at top 3). This is not allowed because the DK item is the topmost item on the chain.
I am indeed talking about the R8 streamed match in Vancouver. I wouldn’t consider this a missed trigger, moreso a general error (TR 702.15.) because the LB player (Xexeto) did acknowledge the trigger; he just rushed to resolve the move item first. Because he obtained an information advantage through this error, a rewind should not be granted and we would continue play (TR 702.16.c.2.).
I saw a few people were accusing @AliEldrazi of rulesharking. This is completely wrong. He knew that killing Rift Herald while its move item was on the chain would cut off digging for more options from the deck. This was a clean play.
#Riftbound QOTD: I move a Rift Herald to attack an enemy Elder Dragon at a battlefield. In response to the move trigger, my enemy plays Flurry of Blades. My Rift Herald dies, and I proceed to resolve the move trigger first and look at the top 3 cards of my deck.
Why is this incorrect? What is the Tournament Rule remedy?
@CRice77000 Tough to say because while he verbalized the deathknell trigger, he proceeded to resolve the move item even though the deathknell item is supposed to be the top item. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a missed trigger, but definitely a general error that is not rewindable
@AikadoLoR Yeah, that’s correct. It’s because Diana is not following the cost within instruction template of “[Do X] to [Do Y]” where X is the cost.
I also agree it’s unintuitive and highly doubt it will stay this way in future sets. Templating changes cannot come soon enough.
#Riftbound QOTD: I activate Baited Hook and target my Glasc Mixologist. It resolves; I reveal a 6[M] unit and want to play it. Assuming I target Kinkou Initiate from the trash with Glasc's deathknell and all abilities resolve, can I draw 1 from Kinkou?
A: Glasc dies and its DK (Deathknell) is pending. The 6[M] unit also becomes pending.
After Hook resolves, the DK finalizes first and we target Kinkou from trash. 6[M] unit finalizes next and resolves immediately, entering the board.
We resolve the DK as top item and play Kinkou. Kinkou’s WYPM triggers as pending, and finalizes after it is played. Kinkou resolves and the condition for other Might is checked on resolution. The condition is met (6[M] unit is there) and we draw 1.
Good question for learning about pending -> finalization -> resolve!
