And if Third's mother ever decides to make a move against Wan later on, Third will have ample grounds to stop her. It’s not that he likes Nine or values him—it’s simply that his mother is the most formidable figure involved, and the current situation effectively arms Third for the future. After all, turning against her right now would only expose Third and Wan to surrounding dangers; as for Nine, he might be safe for the moment, but the more he stirs up trouble, the harder he’s going to fall.

I feel like the way they’ve developed Third in this episode—and Wan in previous ones—is setting the stage so that when Third and Wan eventually crush Nine, the audience will actually root for it. If they had simply had Third step in to protect Wan and take Nine down immediately, some viewers might have been briefly pleased, but others would likely have disliked the couple for being too harsh on their partner just to defend a lover. By building up the tension—as Episode 7 successfully did—they’ve given both Third and Wan more dramatic, compelling reasons to deal with Nine. Plus, there’s still a twist coming
