David Umahi, has given his first detailed public account of the death of Miss Mary Habila, insisting he does not suspect foul play and describing attempts to link him to the incident as politics taken too far. Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, Umahi said the deceased had lived and worked with him for about three years and was far more than just a staff member. According to him, Mary Habila was like a daughter to him, while her family and his family had become like one family over the years. The minister also corrected what he described as inaccurate reports about her profession. He said Mary was a nurse employed by the Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu, and not a physiotherapist as had been widely reported. Umahi disclosed that Mary had been battling health challenges for some time and had received treatment at the Turkish Hospital, with the bills personally paid by him. He revealed that the latest payment he made for her treatment was ₦2.2 million on April 5, 2026, adding that all the medical records are available and can be verified. Narrating what he said were Mary's final moments, the minister explained that she was on a telephone conversation with her boyfriend around the time of the incident. During the call, she reportedly complained that she was bleeding from the nose. The boyfriend advised her to seek immediate attention, but she replied that the bleeding had stopped. The boyfriend then decided to end the call because he believed continuing the conversation could make the bleeding worse. Mary reportedly pleaded with him not to hang up, but he still ended the call, Umahi says. Umahi said the boyfriend called her back about three minutes later, but there was no response. Earlier, Mary had reportedly informed him that she wanted to take her bath. According to the minister, when those around her became concerned after they could no longer reach her, they forced open the door to her room and found her lying lifeless inside, while the water tap was still running. Responding to allegations linking him to the incident, Umahi said he found it unfortunate that some people were trying to politicise a painful personal loss. He stressed that the building where Mary died was a ministry guest house and not his personal residence, adding that it was unfair for anyone to conclude that he was responsible simply because the incident happened within government accommodation linked to the ministry. He said what surprised him most was how quickly some people turned a tragedy into a political weapon instead of allowing investigators to establish the facts. The minister maintained that from the very beginning, he had nothing to hide. He said he immediately involved the relevant authorities, informed the police, and had consistently insisted that an autopsy must be conducted before the body is released for burial. Umahi appealed directly to Mary Habila's family to allow the autopsy to go ahead, saying it remains the only scientific and credible way to determine the actual cause of her death and put an end to rumours, speculation and false accusations. He reiterated that he does not suspect foul play based on the information available to him, but insisted that the investigation and forensic examination should continue so that the truth can be established beyond doubt. No one should rely on social media speculation when science and due process can provide the answers, Umahi urge the public. He concluded by saying that attempts to connect him to Mary's death are nothing more than politics taken too far and expressed confidence that the truth would eventually come to light.

He concluded by saying that attempts to connect him to Mary's death are nothing more than politics taken too far and expressed confidence that the truth would eventually come to light.
