A thread: part 1
So, in this period of deep reflection, I thought I'd take you on a journey behind the scenes at Dorset Life Towers back to 2010. I'd not long been at the magazine and we had a story about an ecclesiastical spat known as the 'Mustard and Cress Libel'...
2. We were struggling for illustrative material, other than a picture of the presiding judge in the case, which was about when one clergyman Rev. William James Vernon wrote 'Whitehead is a Scamp' β in mustard and cress plants along the bank leading up to his church
3. Rev George Whitehead sued for defamation, and won. I decided that I would try to reproduce the libellous phrase on my back lawn, in Mustard and Cress. I got a bit carried away and had exhausted my supply of seeds after just writing the word 'White'...
4. I left the house shortly afterwards, so if your lawn often shows the word 'White' in darker green, I'm sorry. Meanwhile, in the office, we tried to grow a smaller version of the libel on blotting paper. That too failed, although we did manage to satin the carpet...
5. So I ended up driving to Sydling St Nicholas, ironically a watercress growing centre, to shoot pictures of where it all happened. Here's how the piece was illustrated... and not a cress or mustard plant in sight. For more Dorset stories, visit https://t.co/79uU7g7bpm
@HerFaithness @Lordteazyweazy Thanks for the kindness, but please do avail yourselves of the free back issues and do please make a mental note to support the businesses whose adverts appear in those back issues. We wouldnβt have been around for 50 years without their support. See you on the other side:-)
