It never occurred to gafment that their statement about Burundians would get messy?

That it would put our neighbours in harms way? That it would place our people in Burundi - and other parts of Africa - in a sticky situation? That "we" would look bad? Fighting poor hawkers who've never caused us harm?

I have just watched the Foreign Affairs PS explain - with egg all over his face - that "we" were misunderstood. Why didn't the initial communication about this Burundian issue emerge from the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, or his PS?

Now, we have to heighten police patrols in areas where the Burundians reside, and Dr Sing'oei has had the misfortune of explaining that "we" goofed.

We've also had to watch Mining CS Joho explain the reasoning behind asking the Wahindi at Magadi Soda to vamoose. His explanation is solid. Again, why did this announcement not emerge from Joho's desk? It didn't occur to government that that statement would make foreign investors nervous about putting their cash in a place where they can be ordered - Idi Amin style - to pack and go?

And if it was paramount that the President makes those statements, shouldn't it have been through a written brief? Prepared by his experts? Checked for clarity? Diplomacy? Facts? Ambiguity? Issued from State House, and not on the campaign trail?

Communication from the desk of the Commander-in-chief MUST ALWAYS be beyond reproach, because he speaks on behalf of 50 million Kenyans, including the scoundrels harassing Warundi.

The President will have to give that clarification on foreigners himself. All these statements from Gvt spokesperson, CS Lee etc will do little to help. He gave the directive, he will have to clarify it.

President William Ruto, my brother and good friend SIR, the emerging signs of xenophobia against fellow East Africans in parts of urban Kenya are deeply concerning and inconsistent with the spirit of a modern, democratic and integrated East Africa.

The EAC framework is founded on the progressive free movement of people, goods, services and capital. Where individuals are found to be in violation of national immigration or other laws, enforcement should be orderly, lawful, humane and free from collective punishment or hostility towards any nationality.

I urge the East African Community leadership to engage Kenya, Burundi and other Partner States urgently to address these concerns through dialogue and established regional mechanisms.

At the same time, Burundi faces serious economic pressures that are pushing some of its citizens to seek opportunities elsewhere. I appeal to the Government of Burundi to intensify measures addressing these economic hardships.

Our region must choose cooperation over xenophobia, lawful enforcement over mob action, and economic integration over division. East Africans should never become strangers to one another in East Africa.
