On 25 August 1928, Chelsea FC made history at Stamford Bridge — becoming one of the first English clubs to wear numbered shirts in a competitive league match. 👕

Facing Swansea Town in the Second Division, the Blues ran out 4-0 winners on a groundbreaking day for football.

Numbers were assigned by position in the classic 2-3-5 formation, with large black digits displayed on white squares — a simple innovation that helped a crowd of 35,000 easily identify players. 👀

It was a novelty at the time, widely praised by newspapers… and it went on to become a permanent part of the game we know today.

Chelsea weren’t just winning —
