🌻 Daily Endorsement🌻
I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Jo Ann Pottorff and Jill Quigley, former Republican House Representatives, for their encouragement and support.
#votedouglaw#grateful
@DougLaw4KSLeg Eventually the majority forced her hand by moving to call a meeting on their own. At that point, she reluctantly set a meeting for the last possible day and scheduled the start time for the afteroon, giving the task force only a half day to meet.
@DougLaw4KSLeg She pushed for a bill to create a special education task force but then once it became apparent that task force would have a majority of people who understood the issue rather than political hacks, she refused to call a meeting of the task force.
@DougLaw4KSLeg This year she tried to get the legislature to pass a new way of funding SPED proposed by the dark-money-anti-public education Kansas Policy Institute which would have led to decreases rather than increases in SPED funding.
@DougLaw4KSLeg She has also strongly opposed increasing special education funding despite abundant evidence that costs of providing mandated SPED services are outpacing funding.
@DougLaw4KSLeg Rep. Williams refuses to acknowledge the harm done due to education budget cuts during the Brownback administration and that the increases that followed were court-ordered.
She is being challenged in the primary election by a fellow Republican, @DougLaw4KSLeg, a former teacher, coach and adminstrator, who will be a strong supporter of public education.
There's an important primary election in Kansas House District 77 where @DougLaw4KSLeg made our "Top Recruits" list!
Here's a lengthy #Thread about the #voucher-supporting incumbent, Representative Kristey Williams, from Augusta, KS.
A 🧵... #ksleg#ksed
@DougLaw4KSLeg Rep. Williams has led the attack on DEI and SEL initiatives in our schools, refusing to acknowledge those initiatives are based on helping kids have a sense of belonging at school and responding to a suicide crisis and a desire from employers for more people skills.
@DougLaw4KSLeg Instead she has marched in lock step with the national culture war which is being led by people and organizations who want to undermine public support for public education and increase support for vouchers.
@DougLaw4KSLeg Her claim of defending female athletes from unfair competition is another example of taking a national culture war issue despite it not being an issue in Kansas and despite KSHSAA and the NCAA having jurisdiction over this area.
@DougLaw4KSLeg She has also inflicted damage as the chair of the K-12 Education Budget Committee. She listens more to the Kansas Policy Institute than the people who have devoted their lives to education. She insists on tying the education budget to bad policy that wouldn't pass on its own.
@DougLaw4KSLeg She holds the budget hostage and forces it and the unpassed policy bills to go into the conference committee at the end of the session, where they get stuffed, largely unvetted into a megabill where legislators have no opportunity to amend them or even be fully briefed on them.
@DougLaw4KSLeg She has allowed committee members to lecture & attack conferees. She requires conferees to submit their testimony 2 days in advance (most committees only require 1) but she often gives abnormally short notice of the hearings, leaving conferees scrambling to submit their testimony.
@DougLaw4KSLeg Her conduct has impacted Kansans statewide.
It's time for a new recruit - @DougLaw4KSLeg would be the public education supporter we need.
Watch for similar claims from other legislators who we have "benched for academic ineligibility."
