@ChuckLynchlich@Kurt_Steiner The Napoleonic and Revolutionary Wars dug the grave, WW1 was the nail in the coffin.
Unlike the rest of Europe, they never got the 19th century baby boom to recover from Napoleon. It was uniquely costly specifically because they had already fallen severely behind demographically.
@Tzar_the_II Stalin obviously didn’t think it’d be a Soviet walkover, otherwise he would have invaded. Even if the West managed to pull it off, the human cost would have exceeded the geopolitical benefits several times over.
@bhangbhangducx@WASPmexicano Yes. Arguably the primary purpose of the War of 1812 was shattering and diplomatically isolating those more developed native nations. It’s easy to forget that before that the native confederations asserted sovereignty and were playing the Americans and British off of eachother
@Brien_Jackson@AnandPuru@estherzelda0514 The Army was in the process of imploding, with the Hindenburg Line broken and divisions in a shattered retreat, + the Navy mutinied and marched on Berlin.
The military had lost, they just didn’t wait for the Allies to burn unopposed through the Rhineland like Hitler did
@estherzelda0514@KrassAss Ironically, all those responsible had stepped out of the political spotlight just as the punitive reparations hit and those who overthrew them got stuck holding the bag, permanently delegitimizing them.
@Fabrix012@harry_is_boring It may be appealing to their neighbors, who are concerned about being subjugated, but at its core it’s a real politick argument. This isn’t a purely UK phenomenon, most of European geopolitics between 1648 and 1918 revolved around this concept bc it was in their self interests
@FsuTHC4 My great grandfather caught a foul ball at a Dodgers game in Brooklyn, held onto it, and later managed to get most of the team to sign it as a gift for his infant son.
It is still in our possession today as a priceless heirloom. I’m glad he didn’t give it to some random kid…
@Glen_Binnie@harry_is_boring The military staff system in Germany, in an attempt to present themselves as scientific and objective, were prone to catastrophizing - drawing bright lines and warning the end of the world if they were crossed.
A similar thing led to Japan spiraling into an unwinnable war in 1941
@harry_is_boring All Czarist Russia had to do was not blow itself up.
There were reformer figures in the government that seemed to understand that but the monarch and aristocracy let transitory feelings of inadequacy get the better of them.
@Fabrix012@harry_is_boring Is it a cope if they’re transparent about what they’re doing?
They’re not appealing to a higher ideal, they’re explicitly saying “we need to cut down continental contenders before they’re too big to defeat”.
@Macurian1@DeleteTheNats Declaring war on the US was stupid, but tbf the US was de facto at war with them already. By 1941 the USN and Kriegsmarine were sinking each other in neutral waters and the US was sharing intelligence with the British. It was only a matter of time before a cause for war was found
@ssbengale@DeleteTheNats The Germans never had the shipbuilding infrastructure capable of breaking the British navy and by ‘43 the uboat attrition rate became fatal, and that wasn’t something that conquering Russia was going to fix
