I’ve now spent half my life communicating online like George Jetson after spending the first half opening and closing car windows by cranking handles like a fucking caveman.
Randy Turpin pulled off a stunning upset #OnThisDay in 1951 when he took the world middleweight crown from the great Sugar Ray Robinson via a 15-round points decision at Earls Court Arena in London.

Lewis and Lopez could have been world welterweight champ in most eras. Unfortunately, they were top contenders when an all-time great (Jose Napoles) held the crown. 🧈🇨🇺🇲🇽
Hedgemon Lewis wins a 10-round unanimous decision over Ernie "Indian Red" Lopez on July 10, 1969 at Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles.
"The difference in the 10 rounder was an 8 count knockdown scored by Lewis in the 4th round. A right and left followed by a second right dumped the favored Lopez. Lopez had jumped off to an early lead, but the knockdown was the turning point in Lewis's favor. Lopez came back strong in the 9th round, but the speedy, elusive Detroiter managed to avoid trouble." reported The Ring magazine in it's October 1969 issue.
The California papers didn't see it the same.
On their unofficial scorecards the LA Times had it 6-4, the Pomona Progress-Bulletin had it 5-3 and the Pasadena Star-News had it 6-3, all for Lopez.
"I don't care if I lose my license. It was the worst verdict I ever saw. 'Red' won it all the way." said Howie Steindler, Lopez' manager, addressing members of the State Athletic Commission.
"My right hand that dropped him was a thing of beauty. Yes, I did get hurt myself at times during the fight. You can't go 10 rounds with such a puncher without knowing it. I was hurt but never shook up." remarked Hedgemon Lewis.
They'd rematch in October at the LA Sports Arena with Lopez scoring a 10th round TKO.
as expected, the fights this past weekend played to a MUCH bigger audience than they would have exclusively on DAZN. So this was a home run for Abdullah Mason
Boxers better realize, fighting on TNT, comes with some extra pressure- but could also come with greater reward #boxing
One of several world title bouts broadcast live on free network TV during the summer of 1990. The best fights I watched that summer were on ABC, CBS and NBC, not HBO or Showtime.
