An absolute scandal. Still bitterly disappointed that so many MSPs refused to back the Right to Recovery Bill that would have saved lives of those addicted to drugs and alcohol.
Drug deaths surge by 11% in Scotland.

A reminder to please get yourself checked for prostate cancer if you’re within any of the danger categories!
Early prostate cancer often has no symptoms. Don’t wait to feel unwell.
You’re at higher risk if you:
• are above the age of 45.
• have any suspicious symptoms.
• are Black (about 1 in 4 Black men get it, compared with 1 in 8 men overall).
• have a father or brother who had prostate cancer.
• have a BRCA2 gene change, or a strong family history of prostate, breast, ovarian or pancreatic cancer.
If that sounds like you, speak to your GP from age 45. Other men can ask from 50.
There is no routine NHS screening for all men. You can still ask your GP for a PSA blood test. Talk through the pros and cons first - a raised PSA does not always mean cancer.
Book that chat this week. Catching it early makes treatment far more effective.
For advice: Prostate Cancer UK, or speak to your GP.
My wife and I have been appalled by the devastating impact of wildfires this summer and the terrible destruction they have caused to homes, livelihoods and landscapes, not only in this beautiful part of the Cairngorms, but across the United Kingdom and - as we have seen - other regions of Europe.
I can only express my admiration and appreciation to all those who have worked so tirelessly and courageously, in the U.K. and beyond, to bring these fires under control and to those supporting communities facing the long road to restoration and renewal that still lies ahead.
The shock of witnessing these fires around the world in recent months reminds us forcibly of the mounting pressures that prolonged heat and drought are placing upon our precious Earth, and of the increasingly urgent need not only to strengthen our collective resilience, including through preparedness and risk reduction, but also to tackle the root causes of climate change which, if not addressed, risk creating conditions which will make such tragic and costly events ever more frequent.
As the work of recovery still goes on for many, the compassion and fortitude of the communities affected shine through. It is my most heartfelt hope that they continue to find in one another the strength to rebuild.

Remembering all those affected by the tragic events of 9/11, 25 years ago today.
A commemorative Guard Change took place on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace this morning, during which The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester took the Royal Salute on behalf of The King.
The ceremony included performances of both US and UK National Anthems, Hymn to the Fallen and Amazing Grace.
Earlier this year, Their Majesties paid their respects at the 9/11 Memorial in New York, as part of the State Visit to the United States.
Today, we honour and remember those who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States 25 years ago.
NATO Allies stood together then and today.
#NeverForget#September11
Ahead of tomorrow’s 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, I paid tribute in the House of Commons to the thousands of innocent people who lost their lives.
We remember those who went to work, boarded aircraft or reported for duty in the emergency services and never returned home.
We remember their families and everyone whose lives were changed forever.
A quarter of a century on, we will never forget.
Scotland is in the grip of a ‘cancer timebomb’ after the number of cases of killers like prostate cancer rocketed in the last decade.

Did you know that spirits, like #ScotchWhisky, are taxed more than any other alcohol in the UK? Let me explain.
Consumers who choose to enjoy a dram or a spirit-based cocktail - often containing only 1 or 2 measures, equivalent to 1 or 2 units of alcohol – are consuming less alcohol than the 2.6 units found in an average-strength pint of beer, yet spirits are taxed up to four times more.
Let me say that again - taxed more for containing less alcohol.
Not only that but the #SpiritsSuperTax which has increased by 17% in 3 years has reduced government revenue - £1.1bn lower than official forecasts.
The @hmtreasury Budget on 28 October is an opportunity to change that.
To generate growth in every postcode, from the Western Isles to East Lothian and everywhere in between, @andyburnham should #SupportScotch

I’ve written to the Secretary of State for Defence to ask if the UK Government has plans to adopt the new firefighting capability of the RAF’s A400M aircraft.
The system has recently been developed and deployed in France.
I hope this will be considered by the MoD.
NEW Jason Hogg @ThamesVP chief Constable says he’d back emergency legislation barring Pc Andrew Harper’s killers from early release. Hogg says he’ll seek legal advice on possible judicial review to overturn Govt decision. Highly unusual for a police chief to speak out like this.
Scotland has lost a true guiding light of its business community.
Sir Ian was a champion of everything North East, both as a paragon of its economy but also as a philanthropist who did so much good at home and abroad. 1/3
