Barrie Police Service Media Release: Don’t let a friendly chat with a stranger cost you your jewelry

It starts with a stranger saying hello. Seems innocent enough.

Maybe they’re asking for directions. Maybe they’re thanking you for something you didn’t do.

And in the next moment, they’re standing a little too close, pulling you in, and before you realize what’s happened, they’re gone.

And so is your jewelry.

Barrie Police urge residents to be aware of distraction thefts that start as a conversation with a stranger and quickly turn into the loss of valuables from unsuspecting victims.

In some cases, the suspects leave fake replacements behind, and the victim doesn’t realize the swap has even happened until much later.

Police are investigating a distraction theft reported on June 23, 2026.

A white SUV stopped in front of a 77-year-old woman’s home in the Ardagh Road and Ferndale Drive area while she was outside gardening.

The female passenger engaged the woman in conversation, claiming she was a doctor and had been sent to check on someone.

As the woman approached the vehicle, the passenger grabbed her, quickly replacing her valuable jewelry with fakes before the SUV drove away.

No injuries were reported.

These thieves count on people being polite.

They keep the conversation going to create enough confusion to distract their victim long enough to steal from them without attracting any attention.

The scenario may sound obvious. You may think you would never fall for it.

But in the moment, it may not seem suspicious at all.

That’s why these thefts work.

Distraction thefts can happen anywhere – parking lots, stores, and even in your front yard.

Trust your instincts.

If someone you don’t know moves too close, step back. End the conversation.

Walk away.

Ask yourself if the interaction makes sense before engaging.

The theft isn’t complicated. The distraction is. The best defence is to recognize it before becoming a victim.

OPP ADVISES OF NO-FLY ZONE FOR FIFA WORLD CUP 2026

(NOTTAWASAGA, ON) - The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is advising the public of a temporary no-fly zone during FIFA World Cup 2026.

From June 12 to July 7, 2026, a no-fly zone will be in effect over and around the Nottawasaga Resort & Conference Centre, located at 6015 Highway 89, in Alliston.

During this time, the unauthorized operation of drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is strictly prohibited.

The OPP reminds the public that operating a drone in restricted airspace may result in enforcement action, including fines and other penalties.
