Join WriteGirl in the Workshop for a special zine making activity! WriteGirl is an acclaimed creative writing and mentoring organization serving more than 700 teens and young adults annually, mainly from greater Los Angeles.
Join Alyson from Remainders for a special jewelry making activity in the Workshop! Learn a few simple jewelry techniques that will allow you to turn your old baubles into new treasures. This activity is suitable for ages 7+
Students will get a brief intro to the perils of landing a rover on the rough Martian surface. Then they will use the principles of the Engineering Design Process to design, build, and test an impact lander meant to protect their cargo when landing on another planet.
Lastly, local poets Vickie Vertiz and Olga Garcia Echeverría will host a poetry reading, titled Why We Write with students from WriteGirl, a National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Award-winner providing creative writing & mentoring services for more than 700 teen girls annually
The third panel discussion will feature owners of three local, independent bookstores - MiJa Books, IBookPark, and Con Todo Press - sharing their experiences opening independent bookstores, why indie bookstores continue to be relevant, and the importance of children’s books.
The next panel discussion will be led by The L.A. Project, a street photography collective of skilled photographers who aim to capture and tell the stories of the streets of Los Angeles. They will share their work and talk about their experiences as urban photographers.
The panel discussions kick-off with independent book publisher Lil’ Libros and their panel We are the New Storytellers, which features Lil’ Libros authors and illustrators sharing about their Latino/Latinx identities and experiences and how they bring them to life in their work.
