How best to promote professional learning for yourself and others? Be patient. Learning takes time, and if that's the case, so does implementing change. We have to balance decision-making with a realization that at times the best path is the longer, more challenging one.#EDLR5308
Working on my final paper for #EDLR5308, and while I am looking forward to the end, I know this is just the beginning. There is so much to learn and not enough time to learn it all!
I need to thank my fellow UCAPP students from this winter's Learning Theories class. As we know, PLNs comprised of fellow educators will help us escape the solitude and seclusion of our positions, so know I am here to assist you in any way I can, now and in the future! #EDLR5308
One thing that I learned the power of in #EDLR5308 and something I never would have imagined using as an educator...TWITTER! Why did I never consider it when I use social media to reach out to people across the globe for other reasons? Thanks @BernsteinCT!
I just heard the best thing from @BernsteinCT, and here it is paraphrased: "I have a problem with the phrase, 'Failure is not an option.' I'd rather say, 'Failure is not an endpoint.'" I 100% agree!!!! #EDLR5308
To have people embrace change, there's a necessity to build trust between so many people: teachers, other administrators, parents, kids, the Board, and other stakeholders. That's the challenge when different people have different priorities, agendas, and needs. #EDLR5308
Met with the new principal of my old school in Bridgeport today, and it was great just talking about kids being kids and how they all want to learn. #EDLR5308
As leaders, we're expected to know the answers. When we don't, how many of you are okay with admitting that? How comfortable are you with the criticism that may follow? Do any of you "fake" knowing the answers? #EDLR5308
I had a remarkable day welcoming a Chinese delegation of administrators and teachers to Trumbull. We live in a global community where we need to coexist and learn from each other. We must reach out and learn from neighboring districts as well. Build bridges everywhere! #EDLR5308
Since this was just mentioned: https://t.co/7M67xR2TDm This might give you a comedic understanding of how some students feel when assumptions are made. #EDLR5308
I've read a lot about "white privilege" lately, and I have to be honest, it bothers me in so many ways. Please don't respond, "Well, that's because you're white." I see privilege creating inequality and being divisive, but I see "class privilege" more than anything. #EDLR5308
How often do you think teacher or administrator bias enters the classroom or school? How often do you think it influences decision-making? I would argue too much. #EDLR5308
How can we create social and political change in an environment that stifles it? We can rail against controlling power structures, but it may be at the expense of our own sanity or even jobs. #EDLR5308
How do we balance time for family and ourselves with the necessity to do what's best for those we teach? How can we avoid working for nearly 12 hours on a Saturday (as I did today)? What do I say to my 2-year-old daughter when she says, "No homework, daddy. Play!" #EDLR5308
@BernsteinCT said that, as leaders, "very rarely do we share with others about the decisions we make." Self-reflection is important when examining decisions, but so is receiving input from other professionals. We should not feel that isolation is our reality. #EDLR5308
I'm in class with so many different aspiring administrators from such diverse backgrounds and educational experiences, yet we seem to share such similar views. If that's the case, why is there such a disconnect between admin and staff at times? #EDLR5308
How do you best foster trust between administration and teachers? How do you change the mindset of "us" versus "them?" This is key to the success of any building or district. #EDLR5308
Are any of you familiar with Evernote, Diigo, Mentimeter, Yola, TodaysMeet, Twurdy or Socrative? Ch. 3, pg. 24 of Principal Professional Development makes reference to the power of these. #EDLR5308
A great quote to consider from Snowden and Boone: "Using best practices is common, and often appropriate, in simple contexts. Difficulties arise, however, if staff members are discouraged from bucking the process even when itβs not working anymore." YES! #EDLR5308
Effective collaboration, in my opinion, is often difficult to achieve when there are different types of learners who favor different kinds of approaches (pedagogical, andragogical, and huetagogical). Individual personalities and traits also make collab a challenge. #EDLR5308
