The cost of financing US debt is rapidly rising:

On Tuesday, the US sold 30-year Treasury bonds at a 5.06% yield, the highest auction result since 2007.

At the same time, the 30-year Treasury yield jumped back above 5.00%, though it remains below the May 20th peak of 5.20%, the highest since July 2007.

By comparison, auctions for the same maturity were priced at around 2.00% in early 2022.

Long-term yields are increasing as the US debt burden expands, with heavier Treasury supply, rising inflation risks, and concerns over future borrowing needs forcing the government to pay more to attract investors.

Furthermore, the AI investment boom is adding another layer of pressure, as tech companies issue record amounts of debt to fund AI infrastructure, competing with the government for the same pool of capital and pushing long-term borrowing costs higher.

The US debt crisis is intensifying.

**🇭🇺 UNGARN: EIN PRÄSIDENT GESTÜRZT, EINE DEMOKRATIE IN DER KRISE – UND BRÜSSEL SCHWEIGT**

Das ungarische Parlament hat Präsident Tamás Sulyok mit einem Verfassungszusatz abgesetzt – 139 Stimmen dafür, 6 dagegen. Die Opposition boykottierte die Sitzung. Sulyok, ein Vertrauter des früheren Ministerpräsidenten Viktor Orbán, musste das Gesetz unterzeichnen, andernfalls drohte ihm ein Amtsenthebungsverfahren.

Doch das ist nur die Spitze des Eisbergs. Die Verfassungsänderung entmachtet nicht nur den Präsidenten, sondern auch den Präsidenten des Verfassungsgerichts und alle Richter über 70. Sie schließt Abgeordnete mit mehr als drei Legislaturperioden von einer erneuten Kandidatur aus – das trifft mehr als die Hälfte der bisherigen Fidesz-Abgeordneten.

**2/** Die neue Regierung unter Ministerpräsident Péter Magyar (Tisza-Partei) beruft sich auf ein *„klares, beispielloses Zwei-Drittel-Mandat“* der Wähler. Sie sprechen von *„Operation Reinigendes Feuer“* und dem *„Ende der Ära der von Fidesz angerichteten Zerstörung“*.

Doch was sie da abräumen, ist nicht nur ein politisches System – es sind die Grundpfeiler des Rechtsstaats. Ein Präsident wird per Verfassungsänderung abgesetzt, das Verfassungsgericht umgebaut, die Hälfte der Opposition von künftigen Wahlen ausgeschlossen.

**Wer ein ganzes politisches System mit Verfassungsänderungen hinwegfegt, dem sollte man genau auf die Finger schauen.**

**3/** Jahrzehntelang hat Brüssel Viktor Orbán wegen angeblicher Rechtsstaatsverstöße angeprangert, Milliarden einbehalten und Sanktionen verhängt. Nun, wo die neue Regierung mit ähnlichen, wenn nicht noch drastischeren Mitteln agiert, herrscht betretenes Schweigen.

Der frühere EU-Kommissar und Fidesz-Politiker Tamás Deutsch brachte es auf den Punkt: *„Die EU-Kommission, die jahrelang regelmäßig Stellung zum Rechtsstaat in Ungarn bezogen hat, wahrt jetzt beharrliches Schweigen“*.

**Die Doppelmoral ist kaum zu ertragen: Was gestern noch ein Skandal war, ist heute offenbar akzeptabel – solange die politische Ausrichtung stimmt.**

**4/** Orbán selbst, der nach der Wahlniederlage im April ins politische Abseits geraten ist, bezeichnete die Verfassungsänderung als *„Akt der Tyrannei“* und rief zu Protesten auf. Tausende gingen auf die Straße.

Doch die neue Regierung hat die Mehrheit. Sie hat die Macht. Und sie nutzt sie – rücksichtslos.

**Das ist der Moment, in dem sich zeigt, ob Machtwechsel in einer Demokratie wirklich demokratisch bleibt – oder zur Rache wird.**

**5/** Die EU-Staaten schweigen. Die Kommission schweigt. Diejenigen, die jahrelang Lautsprecher der Demokratie waren, sind jetzt stumm.

Wie kann das sein?

Weil die neue Regierung in Brüssel als *„pro-europäisch“* gilt. Weil sie das Erbe Orbáns beseitigt – mit Methoden, die man früher selbst als Gefahr für die Demokratie bezeichnete.

**Rechtsstaatlichkeit wird zur politischen Waffe. Wer das System stört, wird bestraft – selbst wenn er demokratisch gewählt wurde.**

**6/** Der Westen hat eine neue Lehre gelernt: Wenn eine Regierung demokratisch gewählt wird, aber nicht ins System passt, wird sie mit allen Mitteln bekämpft. Wenn eine Regierung demokratisch gewählt wird und ins System passt, darf sie machen, was sie will – selbst wenn sie den Rechtsstaat mit Füßen tritt.

**Demokratie ist keine Frage von Prinzipien mehr. Sie ist eine Frage von Loyalität.**

**FAZIT**

Ungarn erlebt einen beispiellosen Machtwechsel – und mit ihm einen beispiellosen Angriff auf den Rechtsstaat.

Ein Präsident wird abgesetzt, das Verfassungsgericht umgebaut, die Opposition ausgeschaltet.

**Und Brüssel schweigt – weil die neue Regierung politisch genehm ist.**

Die Frage ist nicht, ob das legal ist. Die Frage ist: **Ist es noch Demokratie?**

Marco Rubio discovers the value of the UN and international law. However, international law is about mutual constraints as each state accepts restraints on itself and in return gets reciprocity.

The post-Cold War era was not good for international law as an unbalanced hegemon will not constrain itself. After the Cold War, the US and NATO pushed ideas like "democracy promotion", "humanitarian interventionism", "global war on terror" etc. The idea of these rules were consistent with that of a hegemonic rule - no constraints on the hegemon vs constraints for others, sovereignty for the hegemon and limited sovereignty for the rest.

Now that a multipolar balance of power asserts itself, the former hegemon must accept the principle of mutual constraints and sovereign equality. The US continously attacks other countries and it kidnaps, assassinates, and topples other world leaders. If it wants others to follow international law, then it must also accept to be constrained by international law. The hegemonic era is over.
