[The Society of Thoracic Surgeons @STS_CTsurgery]

It is with a heavy heart that I inform the global membership of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons of the untimely passing of Professor David Taggart of Oxford University—a distinguished cardiac surgeon, clinical investigator, teacher, and leader in our specialty.

David’s contributions to the science and art of coronary surgery are immeasurable. His rigorous intellect, thoughtful critique, and willingness to challenge convention advanced the evidence and scientific discourse of cardiac surgery. Unbeknownst to many, David had been bravely yet quietly battling esophageal cancer. His legacy will endure not only through his scholarship, but also through the surgeons he inspired and the countless patients who benefited from his work.

On behalf of STS and our global community, I extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Kathleen, his family, and our colleagues throughout the United Kingdom and around the world.

We honor his life, his courage, and his enduring contributions to our profession.
