How did an 800-year-old medical manuscript from medieval Serbia end up in the oldest university library at University of Bologna, Italy ?

The monks at Studenica Monastery (founded c. 1186) ran one of the continent’s most advanced clinical hospitals. Saint Sava codified these medical rules in the Studenica Typikon, requiring monks to study medicine, maintain clean wards, and treat the physical illness rather than merely offer spiritual shelter, as was common in Western Europe at the time.

They used these advanced Cyrillic books to run dedicated pathology wards, enforce strict quarantine zones, and perform targeted surgeries.

How did this history reach Italy? Enter Count Luigi Ferdinando Marsili (1658–1730).

Marsili, a brilliant Italian scientist and military general, campaigned through the Balkans during the Austro-Ottoman wars and saw ancient Orthodox monasteries looted and burned. Determined to preserve knowledge, he used his private fortune to buy and rescue over 900 rare Serbian manuscripts. In 1712 he donated the collection to the University of Bologna.

The 13th-century Cyrillic translation of Saint John Damascene’s anatomical and theological works remains carefully catalogued in the temperature-controlled vaults today. Recognised as invaluable global heritage, it is not on open display. It is kept under strict microclimate protections and is accessible mainly to academic researchers and historians studying early intersections of Eastern Slavic culture and Western European science.

The irony of its survival is stark. On April 6, 1941, Nazi Germany bombed Belgrade, incinerating the National Library of Serbia and destroying over 1,400 irreplaceable medieval texts. Because this manuscript rested safely in Italy, it escaped the fires of war—standing today as proof that 800 years ago Serbian monks were reading advanced scientific medical literature.
