A reminder that if you shop on https://t.co/E5E94Nv2ua you can select your favorite indie bookstore and all of the profits of your purchase will go directly to them! They frequently run different sales (including free shipping) with a massive selection of books to choose from !!
LLMs write like this because they aren't embodied, and their entire understanding of language is the statistical relationships between words. So, you get the nonsensical metaphors & descriptors of the kind you see below. What does it mean that "her dress caught and released light"? Did it glitter, did it glow? Was it very colorful? These sentences are written via statistical probability, and not anchored to the observation that one thing in the world is like another, and that can take you strange places. Unfortunately, this can read as a kind of dime-store Arundhati Roy; as "good" writing. It's the kind of thing you fight a lot teaching writing to humans.
i know fandom is looking bleak rn but i cannot stress enough how important it is to be the change you want to see in this space… bring out the freak!!! encourage the whimsy!!!! be nice to strangers on the internet!!! building community is everything
one of my hottest takes about fanfic is that saying you were 'traumatized' or ‘betrayed’ by unfinished fics is entitled and needs to stop NOW. ew! ew ew! it devalues the experience you had with what was written and it's a very capitalistic, consumerist mindset to have about art.
