@manda0249 A full body scan may help show if the nodes contain thyroid cancer. However an ultrasound guided biopsy and thyroglobulin analysis of the lymph node biopsy specimen is a very good initial test that avoids unnecessary radioactive iodine. Blood thyroglobulin level also helpful.

@rachell31259826 This is a very good point. Although the risk of cancer growing back does decrease after five years there is still a chance it could recur. My patients who have been cancer free for five years still get annual blood checks to test thyroglobulin (cancer marker).#ahnschat

A5. A thyroid cancer recurrence is a very emotional ordeal. Having treating doctors who can give you honest and experienced advice will help you make an informed decision about management options. An experienced surgeon is essential. #AHNSchat

A4 while doing the radiofrequency ablation, we keep the probe tip away from areas where we know important structures run such as the laryngeal nerves. To do a RFA properly you need to be very experienced in thyroid ultrasound and biopsies..#AHNSchat

@zemkai It causes ionic agitation —> heat —> necrosis of the cells. The energy delivered and the size of the probe can be controlled to minimize heat transmission away from the probe. It is done under direct ultrasound vision to watch the tissue undergoing ablation #AHNSchat

A4. Radio frequency ablation is a newer option in the US for management of thyroid disease. The small group of us currently performing it use it mainly for benign thyroid nodules however it may be useful for select thyroid cancer recurrences #AHNSchat

A4 in general for solid masses, Radio frequency is likely a safer and more effective option than ethanol ablation However there is less experience with a RFA cf ethanol ablation in the US at the current time..#AHNSchat
