The common saying that it’s better to give than to receive often rings true with relational investors. It can be hard to believe, but allowing people to invest in you can be a gift to them.
We all need mentors and advisors who challenge us and push us to work our leadership muscles in ways we haven’t before because they intrinsically know that resistance and friction are important for developing strength.
Every leader needs people to care for them or counterbalance them. When you are surrounded by a network of support as a leader it creates a safety net to catch you when you fall.
The most impactful strategic networks are driven by purpose. Knowing the purpose or reason behind your strategic network of support will influence the decisions you make about the type of people you surround yourself with for the leadership season you are in.
Social capital, unlike other forms of capital, is renewable and ongoing. It’s a generative resource. As you develop relationships and use those relationships for the benefit of other people it has a compounding effect for yourself but also for the people around you.

Defining where you need people impacts how you rely on them. Most of the people you identify as part of your strategic network of support will be honored and delighted to help you. Providing clear pathways to be of service and add value prevents them from feeling unnecessary.
As a leader, the challenge is that in many cases the very nature of your role is isolating, and it takes a great deal of intentionality and persistence to resist the default of relying on yourself.
Even in relationships where you are receiving mentoring or advice or support, a generous, generative mindset changes your experience and allows you to experience another dimension of relational fulfillment.

Receiving good, regular feedback that you can take positive action on requires that you are approachable. If people sense that you don’t want feedback, they’ll quickly stop delivering it to you.

This is our philosophy about assessment. It moves from looking “at” talent or leaders and evaluating where they fit or don’t or how they measure up or not and turns the conversation to looking “with” leaders at their development It’s a WiLD proposition. @WiLDLeadersInc
Tools are not tests, but scaffolding for learning and growth. When leaders begin to realize that there is no test to fail, or box to fit into, their developmental horizons open up in new ways.

We’re hard-wired for meaningful connections. Leading is a high-stakes endeavor but in most cases we fail to equip leaders with the relational support they need to stand strong for the long-game, to thrive and flourish.

"Change is complex. Coaching works best if the recipient is ready and willing to change. By avoiding a onesize-fits-all approach to coaching, you can increase your—and your clients’—likelihood of success."
Every leader has a storm that is coming around the corner, the only question is when. Who can you surround yourself with right now in order to get ready for the next storm? Who will stand by your side to help absorb the shock alongside you? #Leadership@WiLDLeadersInc
We want to follow leaders who serve, but the reality is that they need support too. Many well-meaning leaders have misinterpreted the servant leadership paradigm to believe that it’s their job to give, not to receive. They can’t ask for help, even if they desperately need it.
@DrRobMcKenna is onto something. He said he’s not interested in leadership — he’s interested in leaders. Big idea - learn to edit and use the backspace key. Other will follow. As a “truth telling” leader, I can take Rob’s advice — say less — as in shut up! #GoodWord#outcomes19
