@TheMathGuru Making mistakes should be normal and comfortable in a math class. We learn from our mistakes - our students should be free to explore their mistakes and learn from them. Sometimes a non example (mistake) is the best one to create understanding.

@BeckyKurkowski No! I have used it with great success with middle school math students learning about solids and volume. We just used some dental floss for easy division of solids. Even as seniors the students remembered the activity.

@coronaxious @SeanMaths4EAL @techknowmath Yes. f(x) is function notation, not multiplication. But the use of x, rather than ( ), is inherently confusing for students learning algebraic concepts. ( ) in math have multiple uses.

@SeanMaths4EAL @techknowmath Yes. Multiplication is implied as a connection with coefficients - literal and numerical, such as 2xy, where we understand that 2 and x and y are connected by multiplication. That is true. The problem is the use of x as a symbol of multiplication.

@shikta_das @Momademia I also took 5 years to complete my Ph.D while working a full time teaching job, a part time consulting job, driving to class after work 2 hours 1 way, with 4 kids in high school and college, and a husband who has Parkinson’s. Reject the shame! Rejoice!

@blkwomxndreams It won’t! I promise! Being a researcher means that we have such a desire for learning that we never stop!Earning a PhD is a personal life goal that once achieved no one can take from us and can open doors that we might want to go walk through. It’s potential not a destination.

@DrBradJohnson When I obtained my PhD years ago, I was constantly asked what my plans were, what job I wanted. My response was simple. I want to continue to teach. I do not consider teaching a lesser job than administration. Teaching is of paramount importance.

@mrsluciabowers You can dislike the new normal of teaching in a COVID reality, but still love teaching. The reason I teach has not been obliterated by a disease. And, I love teaching. The positive for me is more technology available for all classrooms.

@doriecp I heard that same comment when my uncle died of COVID. And yes he was older and had a few health issues (none respiratory), but do age and health issues mean it was ok for him to die? Before COVID he wasn’t dead. What a lack of compassion people show with their comments!
