@nathanrobii Throws him a life preserver every chance he gets. Him, Kitty, Rabi, Lawrence, etc try to ground him constantly but he insists on drowning in ego and self-righteousness. Copes and feigns ignorance & foolish optimism, has you banging on the bookshelves like McConaughey on rewatch.
@nathanrobii Groves views him w a mix of admiration, contempt, and pity that Damon sells excellently. The mutual trust & shared instincts bud even when they’re combative. Groves maintaining both his political dogma/operative mindset & his respect for Oppie during the kangaroo court. 11/10.
@nathanrobii Many such dynamics in the movie but Damon & Murphy rly had one of the greatest screen partnerships ever. Effortless back-and-forth & both bridge the gap b/w the scientific and bureaucratic perfectly. The initial meeting, during the project, Pash scene, post-war — flawless.
@bluelemxnade Even if that were true Prometheus and Covenant in the same franchise are incredible + too many bangers to be this reductive to him.
Churned out a lot of dogshit recently but doesn’t matter. Spielberg didn’t make a great movie for 15 years and he’s still teflon
@womenofthehours Tangent but Fail Safe one of the best (maybe the best) political thrillers ever but gets overshadowed by Kubrick making the best satire ever (on the same premise) in the same year.
@womenofthehours Kubrick’s the only one I can confidently say has a better ovr filmography and even he couldn’t create one of Lumet’s humanist pictures. Elevates his actors like no other and despite some duds has several major masterpieces.
Making Movies is also a good read
@lIlacsky___ Don’t think that’s hot at all, probably t3 for me. Was much higher on DDA upon rewatch and only think of it more fondly over time, one of my favs directed by one of my favs
Michael Corleone is undeniably 🐐 lvl imo, don’t hv much comp for that performance as basic as the pick is
@lIlacsky___ I just bought the new Lenny 4K and Tootsie and Wag have been watchlisted for a while. Never-ending media queue but I’ll get to them eventually
@lIlacsky___ Tho M. Corleone has special scene dominance where we see progression in increments but feels like he & audience r both cognizant of his impending & inevitable arc. Perfect script & hits every beat but elevates it w constant, intentional recalibration of emotion & char. dynamics
@lIlacsky___ Have not seen AJFA but generally i agree, Dustin as Kramer is a richer, more novelistic arc in a perfectly paced film, while Al/Bob are more tailored for the cinematic. Brute forcing & pressure testing the appropriate threshold for tension/emotion, built for larger-than-life pops
@lIlacsky___ Ig I just prefer the former then, Al’s on-screen maturation > Hoffman’s process. But De Niro as Jimmy (GF) and Neil (Heat) feel perfectly crafted at start of their narratives, as a model/authenticator for Hill or a foil to Hanna, perfectly capable of that unseen, accrued psyche.
@lIlacsky___ My sample for Hoffman is smaller admittedly but I feel like even tho his versatility is great on paper, his characters fall in a narrower psychological range, and if he pushes the envelope too far it plays more self-aware & caricatured than embodied (Sean Penn esque). Still elite
@lIlacsky___ I think De Niro (Bickle, LaMotta) and Pacino (Serpico, DDA, Heat) are able to play grungey roles with raw interiority better & more complex than Ratso Rizzo's manic anxiety. Both better at playing commanding/eruptive roles too, Hoffman's energy is more reactive than elemental.
