Well, landed to arrive to this news... He was eccentric- in the middle of a conversation he’d often ask me if I was taking notes. To which I’d say ‘of course not, why would I be taking notes?’ And he’d shake his head and say ‘what I’m saying is very important.’ One of the times we met for dinner and Mbeki had just written a letter which Tito hadn’t yet read. So he asked me to read it to him. I thought maybe the first paragraph & conclusion so he’d get the gist. He ‘made’ me read (no recite as one would Shakespeare) the entire thing! My voice was slightly hoarse by the end of it. As he’d have me reread lines if they weren’t delivered quite right or so that we could reflect on their meaning. He’d also admonish me for being a poor communicator (usually after not picking up a call at midnight). He had a library he was contemplating leaving to some university or other, but thought he might leave instead to a hotel in Limpopo as it would be safer from protesters turned arsonists. He spoke to me about his life in exile, his family, and magoebaskloof. It felt like I had one long conversation with him broken up into various lunches and dinners with no real beginning and now certainly with no satisfying end. His last message to me was, “Stranger. Where on this earth are you? I am at the farm.”

It’s so impressive how Tito Mboweni reinvented himself over the years.

Some know him as the first labour minister.
I grew up with him as the SARB governor and later finance minister.

Younger peeps know him for chicken, pilchards and garlic.

Went for an interview and forgot everything I know. I turned into a puddle of confusion from question 1.
I think I prefer writing an exam rather than an interview. I'm not looking the examiner in the eye whilst writing an exam. But an interview... there are several sets of eyes😭
