While the Islamic Republic was celebrating the anniversary of the 1979 revolution that has brought decades of repression and economic ruin to Iran, it carefully staged its narrative for international consumption.

Selected foreign commentators and sympathetic influencers were invited to report from inside the country, presenting a curated image of unity and support. At the same time, families of political prisoners were reportedly pressured to attend anniversary marches, with threats that refusing to participate could affect their ability to see their detained loved ones.

The crowds shown on state media do not tell the full story. Many attendees include government employees, organized groups, and loyalist minorities. Coercion and state mobilization are not the same as voluntary public support.

Meanwhile, in neighborhoods across Iran, citizens continued acts of defiance. From rooftops and streets, chants against Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and calls for an end to the Islamic Republic could be heard. Despite intimidation, arrests, and violence, many Iranians are still resisting.

The world should be careful not to confuse staged displays with genuine legitimacy. The Iranian people’s demand for dignity and freedom has not disappeared. It persists, even under immense pressure.

@HawaiianAir How do you have kiosks that are frozen and not a single person helping and then have the kiosk spit bag tags but say your system won’t allow us to actually load the bags one minute later major discrepancy, hypocrisy, failure, and awful customer service
